Faiths that do not evolve and change get left behind. It's one of the reasons that Muslim Arab lands are so backward. I have read the Koran and some of the Hadith, and I am familiar with a great deal of history, including history of various Muslim empires. Outside of that, I am not familar with all of the secondary sources of Islamic law.
What I do know in a practical sense is that Islamic law cannot contradict or contravene reality. The basic rules of economics and international interaction apply to all states, regardless of the religious make-up of the populace of each nation.

I don't think Islam needs a reform. However, it needs a renaissance. I believe Irshad Manji is an intelligent and rational woman who hopes for a better Islam to all people of her faith with no limits of gender, socio-economic status, ethnicity etc. In my opinion, she is a good muslim compare to the uneducated who teaches the violence of Islam.

Quran always directs us to turn to Allah; the rest of it is superfluous. Islam is meant to be easy. Surrender to God in prayer, charity and kindness to all (4:36), believe that the Judgment Day is when GOD judges (meaning we aren't supposed to be the judges). I realize changing the Religion is not part of Islam. And it shouldn't be Changed. Islam is an adaptive Religion as it is. However, Islamic Culture (which justifies many of its deeds as part of the religion) is not Islam. It is Culture, and that I believe is what needs to be changed. Islam is Perfect. It is a perfect Religion, and if followed as intended will lead to a near perfect existence. It is because people have been changing it since pre-modern eras that there are so many problems today.

I being a well read muslim can challenge Hamza on many of his theories. It seems that probably he is trying to reconcile Islam with the prevalent Western social belief on homosexuality, which are a new phenomenon and not well-researched also even by the West. Faiths that do not evolve and change get left behind. It's one of the reasons that Muslim Arab lands are so backward. The entire Arab Muslim world, once oil is eliminated from the equation, has exports to the rest of the world that are less than the total exports of Finland. If the Arab nations and their culture, and that includes religion, does not evolve and change, that fact will remain the same.

I have read the Koran and some of the Hadith, and I am familiar with a great deal of history, including history of various Muslim empires. Outside of that, I am not familar with all of the secondary sources of Islamic law.
What I do know in a practical sense is that Islamic law cannot contradict or contravene reality. The basic rules of economics and international interaction apply to all states, regardless of the religious make-up of the populace of each nation.

With time new problems come that have not existed in the first generation muslims when Muhammad (PBUH) lived. These 2ndary sources of Islamic law which are in fact derived from Primary (and no wholly independant) are the means by which Islam can be -> Implemented in all nations and at all times. Thanks for not responding back like those hate filled Bigots I appreciate it. :-)
