As soon as they've found an easy meal, they won't leave you alone. They will be more on guard, but they won't leave. The only thing is that once they aren't babies, you better hope they can't figure out how to squeeze in or you'll start loosing more than chicken food....
Racoons are not destructive to sustainable small home farms. I have chickens and sometimes when I throw treats to my chickens the raccoons will come in and take what they can get away with. And, they raid my bird feeders, So What! I kill about 30 chickens a year and sometimes when I don't have chickens to eat I harvest a Raccoon. It is almost completely free meat and good eating. A raccoon will never take a chicken unless it can get to their roost at night. You did good.
@SustenanceNCovering You have no idea what you're talking about. Raccoons are instinctive killers like cats. If a coon can find its way into a coop or pen they will kill whatever they can catch even if they are sated. I've had them take out 25+ 2 month old chicks with half of them either completely in tact save a puncture wound to the head or their heads chewed off. Yeah, it happens at night but so what? They didn't simply stop when the chicks ran outside.
@redbeakman Raccoons are not people. They do not change their habits. Raccoons always take one chicken out the door and eat it at home. ALWAYS! The puncture wounds that you talk about are weasel. Nothing else. Weasles will always leave wounds in the heads of juvenile chicks, and wounds in the necks of adults. And,the only animal that takes the heads off of chickens is Opposums. I have lost over a hundred chickens in my lifetime, and know how every one of them died. Raccoons are delicious.
A good farmer would have just killed the raccoon (they can not only kill livestock, destroy crops and kill or maim pets but also cause extensive property damage to roofs and sheds). In addition raccoons are the number one carrier of rabies and Baylisascaris Procyonis (roundworm).
The kid sounds like 1 of the monsters in dead space 2

Never mind calling Animal Control this time! This is strictly a job for Smith and Wesson, or Heckler and Koch.

After the raccoons messed with the chicken food did you throw it out, or was that not a concern?
