Nevermind, my mistake was assigning a new material to the decal, it simply goes onto an additional texture for the material you're trying to place the decal on, and a new UV layer, of course. You can have multiple textures for each material, each with it's own UV layer.
I am using Blender 2.58, and I can not get this to work. I think the issue is that my mesh already has a material applied to it. How do I slap a transparent PNG decal over an existing material? It appears that I can only have one material , the existing texture or the decal, on a face. Not both. I understand that the proper way to do this is to apply the decal to the texture using the UV layout template, I'm just trying to learn this trick as well. My only other option is to use an empty?...
I'm starting to like this 2.55 setup, it's quite neat, efficient, and just looks... professional. :D Btw, does anyone know what hotkey/what menu the sync UV mesh button is now? It's the one that makes any vertice selected in the UV editing area selected in the 3D view port.
@superflycos123 It all depends, if you're used to something like Maya or 3Ds Max and you wanted to give Blender a shot, 2.50/2.55 is really good because its far closer to what they're used to in terms of buttons and UI. But it also isn't that much different than good old 2.49, just the buttons and UI have been cleaned up, and moved around. In the end, you have a much nicer UI and interface to work with, and I'm an ex-blender user :D.
@steven198807 You will got a quickest access to the tools by shortcuts from your keyboard. Unfortunately it will take couple months to get use to them. That's why 90% of people goes away from Blender in 2 days. With 2.5 version it seems to be little easier to learn how to interact with Blender. And being on this level starts great fun working with Blender, which then is a very friendly 3D software. But if you need fireworks as mograph in Cinema you will not find such things in Blender.
@northmantif Thanks i gave blender 2.5 try and found it very impressive, howvever it seems to rely too much on hotkeys. I dont find hot keys a problem expect i am more use to a gui and rather have things like edge loop on screen. Also found that blender has someweaks such has it cannot handel n-gons etc, this could be why so many companys dont use the program its a bit of a mess aldo i guess with some time you can fully customize the program to be better.
cool tutorial, I was curious how the new version was coming along, looks like it might take some getting use to. I used a similar process in 249b to put a tatoo on a model. Interesting to see how it works in 2.5, thanks for sharing as always.
They have posted alpha 2 now becasue alpha 1 had a bug causing it not to save textures.
@lzura You should download 2.5 because it doesn't have an installer you can just make a new directory anyplace on you hdd and copy the files into it, then It wont affect your 2.49 build.
Hey man. just wanted to Thank you for the videos. they been really great at leatting me get my bearrings in blender. glad to see you do more.
one qurestion: since i got Blender 2.49 a month ago and now i seem to be getting the hang of it. i been reluctant to isntall the 2.5 alpha (been follwing your vids) so is there any particular advantage ,other than the UI, that i should know about?
The internal renderer is faster, theres partcle smoke and all the usual stuff, im using 2.49, i have tried 2.5 twice, i think its quite good but ide say you might aswell stay with 2.49 until 2.6 at the most but i wouldnt fully switch right now.
2.49 is an stabile veriosn whith all of the belnder tools...
2.5a1 is an optimization anc cleanup of the 2.49 whith some new sweet tools.. like render optimization.. but its stil in alfa so not all "old" functiond arent optimized
Thank you very much! It's very helpful.

How well is blender compared to 3d Max Studio?.
Can all the tools be accessed from menu's/side menus or do you have to know the shortcuts.
Are there any modifiers like Max ? and if so are they all in a easy to reach place?.
How well layed out is the program, i need quick acess to things like the basic tools Extrude,inset,bridge,connect,splines/shapes etc.
I ask because it may be cheap to start a studio using apps like blender, gimp etc

Is there any good reason that I don't have the UV Editing option under that menu? Even when I search for it, it doesn't come up :-/

Software cycle is: Alpha, Beta, sometimes Gamma, and then release.
Alpha = incomplete and unstable. Features are in the process of being added/removed/changed
Beta = Features are stable, most of the program works as expects, bugs are to be expected, crashes and data loss can happen
Gamma = pre-release, almost good to go.
Blender 2.5 is in Alpha 2. Good to use to learn the new UI but don't use it for production work.
Hope this helps.
Hope this helps.

yeah, that was one of the goals of the overhaul, to make it more usable for the people migrating from 3ds max and maya.
ward7299 2 years ago
God knows they needed a UI overhaul... one that makes sense.
I might even start looking into it again now... although I've given up on it many times.
