None of the clothes I wear have visible brand insignia, the exception being my shoes. But with size 15 feet I don't exactly have a ton of options. :-(
All too true!!! I hate brands with a passion also, as you said not just the commercial kind either. We have a similar problem in Oz with our political parties trying to represent whole swathes of the community based on an assumed connection. Which as you say is either extremely tenuous, or none existent. Also, we unfortunately have one of the most politically apathetic media industries in the world. Mostly run by Murdoch so you know we got probs! Arrgghh! Anyways good points liked the vid !
The only aspect of branding I care about is using the name as a by word for quality. Or lack of it with some brands. I don't care what name is written on something, only that it fulfulls the purpose for which I bought it, does it well and will last. Rather than buying from a different company each time, if I find one product that's good, I might try another. I'm lazy.
But group identities...blyeach...they usually try to become more important than our individual identities; fuck that bullshit.
"You aren't what you own," simple words I've tried to live by over the past decade or so. Unfortunately, most measure success in their "toys" and status of their toys, achieving status via the status of a product. What happened to just "living?"
Where it really sucks is when people take that extra step beyond just the tribal branding and make it a part of their own personal identification. Look at rabid sports fans religious or political party affiliations, nationalism. It can be for a product such as Coke, Budweiser, or an alma mater. A product defines who a person is, which is a rather sad state of existence... and which the corporations just love.

its an interesting phenomenon, associating brands with attitude, lifestyle, and so on. its a shortcut from thinking.

But haven't people done this, more or less, for a lot longer than what we might think? Don't you start with an ideology then basically evangelize it?
Unless I missed your point. I've been doing that a lot lately since I'm kind of thick.

Talking about the shortcomings of the GOP is only part of the problem of the post civil rights era two party system we face.
I think perhaps if we wouldn't have had the strain of Vietnam with the loss of Kennedy and in a real sense the loss of Nixon
It really ruined any positive aspect of either of these two parties which in essence are the biggest 'brand' promoters there are.
Democrats are the party of the people, yeah right ! lol!
