@dublinpeter1 "When he turned the soil over each spud fell over. NOT the way to do it."
Yes it is. The potato shoots will grow towards the surface whether the seed potato is planted sprouts up. sideways upside down or doing the cha cha. Good video. Many thanks newheys
You can. There aren't any loos on my allotment so when I am taken short I chuck the results into the potato trenches. That said, you are probably better off putting it into the compost heap where it helps break down the vegetable waste.
i love the accent, and the straight-forward simplicity of the video. I am trying to plant some potatoes, and this video was a great help! Thank you. How often should I water??
6" deep (14 centimeters). Is it really important to let the eyes sprout? The eyes of the one I planted were just starting to sprout, and I'm thinking I should've waited a bit to let them sprout more.
Thanks for this video! I live in the USA, in California, about 1 hour north of San Francisco. Planted my potatoes today using your method. Thanks,George and daughter!
I hope your weather is better than ours. The tradition in England is to plant potatoes on Good Friday, which apart from Sunday when labour was not allowed, was the first opportunity the working man had to get out and work his plot. Today we had unseasonable snow, and my potatoes are still unplanted!
Oh, I can't imagine snow at Eastertime! We are having unseasonably warm weather with occasionally a bit of frost overnight...just enough to make the grass pretty in the morning.
I didn't know about the planting potatoes on Good Friday thing...I'll do it then from now on.
can anyone advise me of a cheap way of creating the loops over the beds to create a mimi polytunnel please.from a 52 year old begginer . i planted my spuds today, using a 30 year old percy thrower book...not thing seems to have changed much.!your soil looks a lot lighter than mine, thanks and happy gardening from Kilkenny Ireland
Hi - for the loops buy a length of 15mm or 22mm blue poly pipe from screwfix direct and cut into lengths of 6ft for a 4 ft bed. I used 15mm. Put dowel in each end to push into the ground. Use screws to hold in the dowel and the screw heads for twine to hold down the polythene. I believe Geoff Hamilton has a video of this somewhere on the internet.
This doesn't help me get Portal 2.... VALVE!!!!

It was straw based horse manure that was about 4 months old. Not fully rotted, but enough.

Thanks for documenting this.... It was an interesting video to those interested in planting potatoes.
I am curious though about the raised soil in the boxes... what purpose did this serve?
MRSketch09 2 years ago
What kind of compost was that? It looked like a tub of leaves, was it just leaves?

I have never watered potatoes in my life.
If it is dry, mulch will help, but if you have plenty of organic material dug in, then you do not need to water, unless in a desert!

No, eyes do not have to be sprout first. As long as there are eyes that's all that matters.
