When John leaves the barn he should have gone out with the evans repeater. 22 shots. Could have taken them all out. Then because he was in dead eye he would be immune to gun fire. Spam a few medicines for good measure. Sorted.

This is a pretty epic mission, but it's sad that they killed off John. I have a save before this mission though so I can continue playing as him. Only problem is I can't change outfits.

The gunfighter at Fort Mercer is still open for me, and all the bounties and treasure hunts are still there. Hope this helps. Remember these games cost a bomb, so you paid for all this stuff.

And after this mission you're gonna play as Jack as an almost grown up (around 17-18 I think) and take revenge on Agent Ross. You're gonna meet him in Mexico in a shoot-out. If you kill him, You've completed the whole story and you're gonna play as Jack forever.

And at the end when the Undead come back,John would come out of the grave.

They should let you keep playing as Jack and have him kill John,Then Seth for taking the mask from the catacombs.

This was such a fantastic (first) ending and Marston needed to die. It gave a lot of gravity to the speeches Dutch and the Bureau gave about change; that Marston (and Ross) would eventually pay for what they have done. I'd strongly recommend giving the Red Dead wikia page a gander reddead.wikia.com/wiki/Edgar_R­oss as the story is fantastically well written and you can see the characters' foreshadowing of what they would do.

Glad you skipped the cutscenes they're painful! I knew we all liked John but reality was he was in fact a criminal who had to pay for his crimes, he even committed some while we controlled him, people like that shouldn't walk among the rest of us abiding citizens in society. Even if they do change they have to pay for their mistakes. And John knew that, he knew the last enemy to be destroyed was death. To give his family freedom.

Marston was a likeable chraracter you grew to care for though.

My point is that Marston already suffered enough. This wasn't life teaching a lesson. This was life showing how absolutely and unnecessarily cruel it can be. It also showed how life can go without karmic retribution for some who deserve it more. A man trying to mend his ways gets shot like a dog and remembered as scum while everything he tried to do goes down in darkness while another who is genuine scum and lovin it dies a "hero". Its life. And life sucks.

Though John was a bad person in his past and tried mending it, he was still killing innocent people even in side missions that didn't need to die and he knew it, he knew he was still doing wrong. But John did get redemption, after his death when Jack murdered Edgar Ross, so the karmic balance is there. I agree with ya, but John shot the first bullet and they shot back. The point was to get attached to John. Excellent writing here.

Side missions are just that; side missions. They are an optional part of the story. Just like its optional to go around and shoot up towns. I wouldn't count them along John's journey. Though I don't remember any part of the story side or otherwise where he was killing innoccents.

What balance? John dies and history recognizes him only for his past, his wife dies shortly afterwards, his son is driven down the path that he worked so hard to steer him clear of--

Ross takes the credit of John's good actions, goes down in history a hero of the proto-FBI and America in general, his skewed form of justice stays with him even in death, and his death is forever a pyrrhic victory for the Marstons. I don't see any form of justice being served besides Edgar's bastardized and hypocritic form of justice. Like I said, I just see life not being fair.

@SpockHD there is no definitive reason, but the best reason was that John Marston is still a mercenary in the law's eyes, even though he decided to fled that life. Edgar Ross took this opportunity to take down John Marston as a big "bounty" to get the medals and fame he wanted. that fat pig will burn.......

I remember thinking in this mission, "Why not just get to the top of the barn and throw down some of that dynamite?". Guess that would be kind of a cop out though. The ending is sad, but it's supposed to be, it's fittingly bittersweet. I played a couple times to see if I could pick Archer and Ross out of the crowd, I think I got archer, not sure though...
