i was getting into learning the guitar but i wasn't allowed to learn anymore because i was starting year 9 in september and the teachers said i need to focus on my gcse's, it's so unfair!
thanks for uploading the videos it really helps me to continue learn the guitar.
my daughter is just starting to learn acoustic (i play bass, but she wants to play guitar, i can only show her so much, she's braver than me ;-) so these videos will be great for her. much appreciated!
You didn't really tell us what "diatonic harmony" is or where it comes in... you just explained the major scale and its construction. Is diatonic scale just another name for the major scale?
stick close to the 1 3 5 of the scale and repeat 7ths are great lead tones if your going to add color (a chromatic note) make sure it leads into a strong beat. nothing to it really
learn one octave of the scale, say A major for instance, and get someone to play an A major chord for you and have a little play with the scale. this is pretty much the basis for guitar solos as well as melody/vocal lines.
when your backing is playing A major chord in this instance, some notes in the A major scale will be 'stronger' (more CONSONANT) than others, at first stick with the 1st, 3rd and 5th notes in the scale then add more in as you get more confident on the fretboard
The note on the 5th fret of every string is the open note of the next string, the 6th fret is the 1st fret of the next string, the 7th the 2nd note of the next string, and so on. (the only exception is that the 4th fret of the G string is the open note of the B string). That's all you need to know to play across the fretboard.
I have a question, dunno if you read this or not but...
how to do you play across like that? the patterns that is? I get the concept of whole scale - half scale pattern, but not sure how to take it to the next level I guess. Do you memorize the pattern and then just transpose it to the next key? Is this something you could do in another lesson? :)
thank you sooo much this helped alot because i was yhaving trouble with the diatonic harmony stuff u rock! dude thar was awsome but i wld like u to make a video on the strings and how theyr labeled and stuff and how u noe which one is which pleez
how do i go about getting one like yours a guitar that is the YAMAHA-FJ-645A or a yamaha guitar that is like yours that they make now i really like the tone it gives.
Im getting to grips with the diatonic scale, thankyou for explaining it so well! My only concern is that I can't play it as fas as you do in the video, is that okay?
hey man thanks a lot for that lesson it solved a lot of my questions.i love the guys out there that try to teach this stuff in a one minute video.great job
This is a very useful lesson, and a very IMPORTANT lesson to learn for any musician that is starting theory. I'm currently taking AP Music Theory at my school, and having knowledge of major scales, and key signatures was key to understanding most of the concepts in the class.
I have struggled for some time to understand the relationship of notes-harmony-scale. This is the best expanation I have ever had! I got it right away from the way you explained it. Thanks!
When he calls me a guitar champ it makes me feel so good inside and I don't even play this instrument.

Good question. I will eventually do a lesson for this. Yes you memorize it, and then move it up and down the neck as per what key you are in.
