Have you ever considered using aged urine? And maybe building a greenhouse like cover for the plants to let the sea water fall away from it while underway?
replace the clear tubing with black so you will not get algea, or you can run an algecide. Im sure being on water that is loaded with algea would make this an issue for sure... and add three 90's on that t, it would make for better drain flow... but looks good for an old salt!
Great video! All good info on building a homemade hydroponics system. Thanks for the step-by-step guide :) I personally like the sound effects when you were cutting the PVC pipes and drilling the holes for the feeding tubes! LOL!
Is the air pump just on a timer so that it only feeds at proper intervals? Is the back cap on the feeding tube also a one way valve so you can refill it without pulling the system apart?
@Rasulis - Yes, the air pump is on a timer that I set however I want. I put the cap on the reservoir to facilitate cleaning of the chamber. I don't think this is necessary. To refill, simply pour the nutrient solution into one of the planter holes. I would actually do this with the air pump on. This way, I was able to fill the growing chambers to the appropriate level. Then turn the pump off and let the solution drain into the reservoir.
@TreborNosredna Thanks. How powerful is the air pump? Also do you put it into the solution so it also acts like an airator at the same time? I like this idea because it combines the hydroponic and hydroponic setup into one pump.
@Rasulis There is a 3/4" pipe inside the growing tubes through which the solution flows... i've drilled a hole beneath each plant hole for the solution to enter the chamber. So, yes, after all the solution has been pumped up into the growing chamber, bubbles come out beneath the roots. The plants love this, in fact, some holes bubble more than others (unlevel) - the plants receiving more air bubbles grew faster. The air pump was the biggest that I could buy at my local pet store.
@HellisLikeNewark Good point. Guess you have to get creative and figure out a way tao protect them. Maybe harvest when the weather picks up. Or just move inside.
When is the next episode? I'm still in school now but I plan on getting an IP38 a few years after working to liveaboard. I also have many plants (and a green thumb) and this concept of hydroponics intrigues me.
When you produce another episode, I will be sure to watch it to learn more about life afloat.
anybody any advice on resovir size. I always to aim to use the smallest size possible to save water & nutrients as they are expensive. Using 100 hunder litre tank seems rediculous unless you are growing large number of plants. I usually try and use between 30-50 as changing every two weeks is costly on nutrient compared to what you would use with soil. In the discovery hydro doc they mentioned the the water is only ever topped up and never discarded to replace what is use to eliminate waste
just a suggestions you might want to change the tubing to black , clear will cause algee to grow if water comes into contact with light , cool unit though
Now the water gets pumped in the top but gravity says its just going to run back down when the air pump is off or even overflow if theres more water then the top tubes can hold. how long do you leave the air pump on per day or hour? 12 on 12 off? Every couple hours on or what? please resond back.
i think you mean land lubber. lover would still be applicable for someone who is really attached to terra firma, but if you mean someone who's just not a sailor per se, that's a land lubber
I think it's called rock-wool... you can get it from your hydroponic dealer. This provides a foundation for the plant as there is no soil for support. Thanks for the props!
Rockwool is naturally high on PH. Flushing the RW with PH down is not a good idea. Instead bring a medium of water to the desired PH and soak the rockwool overnight. Shake it out and let the excess water run. Don't squeeze it. This is not required but some prefer it.
I really like the end product you built but it isn't very clear how to get there. I'm taking my boat south next year and would like more info about gardening while underway.
We don't get internet on our computer away from dock. While in our marina, I receive a wireless signal from a box on the dock. We do, however, get internet on our iPhones while away from dock and within T's coverage area. I reckon we could also get one of those usb gadgets.

PVC is an extremely common material used in commercial hydroponics. As PVC breaks down (sunlight, age, etc.) it releases small amounts of chlorine which is present in much higher quantities in normal drinking water. It is total safe for food. It is NOT safe for archival purposes like paper or photographs which is why it gets a bad reputation. A lot of house water pipes are PVC.
not a bad idea. it is definately in prototypew stage tho... Question: what size airpump?, is it on a timer? how is the overflow set up?
Suggestion: Use Black Light tite Tubing or tape it up with some Black Electrical tape or Metallic Duct tape, this prevents algae or bacteria from growing in your reservoir. if water does not receive any light nothing bad can develop in the water. other than that pretty nice prototype. also funny your growin spinach like popeye lol
The air pump is a Whisper 100 Air Pump with 2 air outlets. I think I could have used the smaller Whisper 60 but wanted as much aeration as possible. The pump is on a timer. Yes, definitely need to use black tubing.
