Wow!! What the hell is that car made out of? Cardboard?!?! I believe super fast cars shouldn't be super light nor super heavy... but just heavy enough not to make it go airborne like that...Funny cars are gay.....I like the regular drag racing though
Appears to be a drag chute malfunction. I've been around drag racing for 45 years, and the last thing drag racers pay attention to is the chute{s}. It can be a lifesaver or thr worst white knuckle ride ever when it all goes wrong!!.
Damn I remember watching this on tv with my dad when I was a kid. My dad was a huge Bob Glidden fan, I still have a bunch of Glidden model kits in the basement. Ah the good ol days.
bob was an inovator for sure. he was the first to cut and section cylinder heads. he used a stone pizza oven to cure the heads. with ports big enough to pass a ciggarette pack through.
bob glidden is still involved pro stock i think he's the crew chef for larry morgans dodge...best dam ford racer in history..back in the day he was running a 351 cleveland sbf..beating the big block chevy and mopar guys..in pro stock..but ford never realy help the gliddens they did most of the work and testing with there own money or what ever they could get from sponsers..
Whats funny about this is that after he got out and was cleared he took his jacket and covered up the manifold . . . becuase he didnt want ppl to see what he had under the hood because was is that damn good
actually it was the parachute if you watch it deploys uneven and whips from the drivers side to the passengers side pulling the rear of the car arround.
i hear that ford is returning to prostock for2010 with mustang? and will bob glidden have any involvement in it ,btw dose he still build ford race engines
i remember watching this back in 86 i actuially have it taped and one interesting thing was just after Bob got out of the car and got his faculties back he took off his fire suit and covered the top of his engine with it to hide the intake manifold. For those that dont know the pro stock guys keep this as very guarded top secret stuff.
i met bob yrs ago at raceway park here in nj. nice guy.. shook his hand and said good luck. he blew everybody away in that 351c fairmont. i dont even watch nhra anymore. all the cars look the same. ditto for nascar. yuk... how bout those fords!
sure wish I'd been born a few decades earlier ... then I'd have been around for drag in its prime and I'd love to see Jungle Jim do a flaming burnout in real life .... he was too young to go at that age
I happened to be watching the event when the accident occurred. When Bob climbed out of the car the first thing he did was to take off his jacket and cover the intake manifold so no one could see his secrets!
Bob was a great racer. At the IHRA race in Darlington the following year, Bob almost became the first doorslammer driver over 200 miles per hour, in Mountain Motor form!
nobody will do it . with a ford like bob did it. ford really should be ashamed. for not helping that family. instead they help john force. john prob. doesnt even know the firing order of a big block ford . bob glidden will always be the MAN.
Bob was my favorite driver.I really wasn't much of a pro stock fan,but when Bob raced i would always watch.A true champ, this guy gets up and brushed off the debris off his suit, stitched up his cuts and was ready to go and race another day.A as far as John F. I think its time he hangs it up,i mean look at last weeks race he has 4 funny cars and still did not win the race,Tony Pedregon took it.I live about 10 minutes away from John and its a shame that I'm not a fan of his anymore
Too true! I love the old drivers who built and tuned their cars on their own, Don Garlits, Don Prudhomme, Bob Glidden and Warren Johnson are my favorites.
I also liked Gary Ormsby's attitude. Although he didn't know much about the cars, he always admitted it, always gave huge thanks to his crew and said "I only drive this thing".
@392g Its funny you mention that too becasue all of those fuel cars are chrysler powered, the brand logo is but a mere sponsor. You are absolutley right ford shoulda helped the glidden family.. can u imagine how many fords were sold becasue of bob?
@392g Bob is the MAN, for sure. Back in the day, Bob built his cars, drove the rig to the track, tuned them, and then drove them to victory. Nowadays all you have are paid pussies that can only drive.
slimjim18, What I saw and believe I saw it correctly was, the chute came out, dropped streight down, went under the wheelie bars then opened, when it did it liftied the rear of the car and the chute slid to the side and flipped the car. No he didn't hit the brakes too soon, he was way to seasoned for something that stupid.
if you watch this footage carefully, pause it at exactly 15 seconds. you will see the rip in the parachute. Im not saying your wrong, the chute probably did go under the wheelie bars before opening, which is probably what ripped the chute. though Steve Evans and Don Prudhomme dont mention this fact on this clip, which comes from Decade of Thrills 2, Steve and Brock Yates do mention the parachute ripping on And They Walked Away, and I believe they are right...
It wasn't the chute that ripped but one of the lines holding the chute which pulled the car in the direction he went. It didn't fall under the wheelie bar at all.
I was there that week end. With Levine racing and Berry Barone who won super comp. We had the motor home and car trailer right where he went up on the gaurd rails. The one rear wheel that came off, hard to see in the video, landed right next to us, I picked up a piece of the tail light, just the Thunderbird center piece was left, gave it to someone a while later. That was a nasty crash. I always wondered if it was on line. Guess so.
your "info" on the top right of this screen is half wrong. Bob Glidden did NOT apply the brakes too early!!! As his parachute deployed, it tore. This caused the wind to hit the parachute at an odd angle which sent the car out of control. The announcers even point this out in the replay!!! Shows how much, or how little, you pay attention...
i had this on tape a while back but i think it got ate up by the vcr...lol the race after gliddens crash ended up being the finals even though it was the semifinals

Yes, one of the lines holding the chute to the car broke causing it to pull to one side.
