I know what that's like. I've recorded some random stuff with my cousin before, we didn't have a camera, just a mic. We just edited things together because we were getting physically tired from trying so many times haha.
I don't mind playing by the music, but which ever you choose to do should be played that style consistently throughout the piece. Like I said though, overall, good job! One of the better vidoes you'll see on YouTube
I wouldn't have even noticed the editing if the camera didn't change angles lol. Overall very good performance. I have a book of 42 Joplin pieces and played through regularly until I injured my shoulder. This has always been one of my favorites. Only thing I have to say about this is that The beginning started off what seemed to me to be a lot faster with more syncopation and improv, which left me expecting more, but ended on a rather slow and "by the music" note. I don't mind improv, and
@stsfef Thanks for the comments... haha, you're the first person to bust me on the editing. You know, after playing the song 20 times and not getting a good take all the way through, I said screw it, I've got a good first half, and a good second half, I'll just put them together.
Well, in my view this is one of the rare finds on YouTube. Someone is actually playing it at the right tempo, and not only that playing it well. Truly a rare find. Well done, sir! Lol Daphne.
I hate to be one of those guys, I really do, because I really like the tempo and everything, it's a very mature playing of this song, but the things you've changed from the original music (intro, section b "jazzy" style, etc) just don't feel good to my ears. I feel like you're trying to make it into a jazz song, which it isn't. Rarely, if ever, did Joplin add a swing beat to his 4/4 music. It's a "slow drag two step" which basically assumes the lack of that kind of stuff.
Nice job. I think Scott Joplin meant the music to be played just like you want to play it. I hate it when it is played so fast you can't even enjoy the beautiful tunes and notes. Why not swing it...good job.......I like the way you play.
Nice. I really like the swing you added. There's NO reason at all that a person shouldn't be able to modify the interpretation of the music to their liking. Like clydecrushy2 said, Joplin did quite a bit of swinging in his own interpretations. After all, that's pretty much what seperates rag from classical, apart from the integration of blue notes.
I think you really get/feel this genre of music. I enjoyed the tempo and interpretation and I think Scott would have enjoyed it also. Thanks for posting one of my two favorite rags. Record Pineapple next please.

yes it is a crime to swing ragtime, your just plain dissin scott joplin. and if your gonna change the music, at least make it more enoyable and play it faster. im 16 and i play it probably 30 clicks faster
geeze koehler, how old are you? this guy is 16! how many clicks are you playing it at? i guess if you were more talented, you wouldn't need to pretend it was such a bittersweet gem.
of course far be it from me to criticize you. i was still in diapers and illiterate at 16.
check out the piano roll at the video "Maple Leaf Rag Played by Scott Joplin." he's swinging it himself.
This piece has long been one of my favorite rags.....I've performed it many times (in CLASSICAL concerts).
But I LEARNED a lot from your performance.
I would guess that even the people who love your performance don't fully appreciate all that you're doing -- although probably their instinct tells them you're doing great stuff.
Wonderful balance between a classical approach and "doing your own thing."
You have fantastic posture, you really seem to love what you play. Fingers are nice and round, movements crisp. It's great to watch an experienced player! Thank you for posting your video!
Why doesn't this have 5 stars? One of the very few videos of Joplin's music on youtube that is actually deserving of the rating. Well, I gave you 5 stars, hope that everyone else does to. ;)
This is such a sweet rag by Scott joplin - has it been recorded - but anyway, if it is one of the more un familiar Scott Sopkin rags, now we've got what you gave us at YOu tube.
@Trolias2: It shouldn't be too hard to find on the net, but my copy came from "Scott Joplin, All Time Favorites" publisher is Carl Fischer, Copyright 1985.

I bet right around 2:22 it goes from Chauvin's part to Joplin's part... the first part of this rag doesn't sound like Joplin

Ragtime SHOULD swing, but should never be played fast. Scott Joplin said that you need to enjoy every musical phrase, therefor don't play it fast.

Beijing, first of all, prove it, and second of all, what you find enjoyable and what everyone else finds enjoyable can be different. Deal with it.

The B-strain is played very well. The keyboard may be distorting, but it seems like some left-hand octaves are dropped in the A-strain.

You are wrong..the first two themes are by Louis Chauvin just before he dies, The theme is by Joplin...look it up...nice playing however

Who is wrong? My video description says "Heliotrope Bouquet by Scott Joplin and Louis Chauvin", which is entirely accurate.
