  • HI MIKE, NICE TO HEAR YOU DO A HARVEY ANDREWS SONG, AS A FELLOW BRUMMIE I'VE SEEN HIM LIVE SEVERAL TIMES AND THINK THAT HE IS SERIOUSLY UNDERRATED AS A SONGWRITER/PERFORMER. THANKS FOR POSTING

  • his songs are brilliant.. even got some of his vinyls

  • Brought tears to my eyes. Beautifully song and played as usual. Thanks

  • it did me when i first learnt it.. and thanks for listening .. regards

  • While I think of it God rest Graham Cooper sad to see them slip by one by one, anyway "Ichingiching" lovelly version and nice to see that Harvey hinself cleared up any misdunderstanding

  • its always sweet when a great songwriter takes the time to intervene.. i try to choose songs carefully.. this one is very special..

  • Warwick 2011, where you there, did not see you.

  • hi skip..my sabatical from folk festivals continues..i need some new songs..

  • hi skip..my sabatical from folk festivals continues..i need some new songs..

  • Causewaybard has now E mailed an apology and all is forgiven!

  • and so he should Harvey.. its a brilliant song..

  • Sorry causewayboard, I have no idea where you get that idea from. I wrote "Margarita" after Graham and I had gone on to solo careers. The idea that I would claim as my own a song written by a great friend is, to say the least, offensive. harvey andrews

  • It was actually written by Graham Cooper, he simply didn't claim it.

  • Oh that does break me up too. I had a customer who broke down in tears one day and told me of her 1st born son who died in viet nam in the 1st days he was their -- we became close and she took me to the cemetary and the first time I came to her house, there in the foyer was his photograph - just a boy really - she didn't believe it was true and was sure there was some mistake...she never got over it.... I had lost track of her over the years but this sensitive rendition brought it all back ...

  • everytime I go to Ypres this song comes back to me,

  • these is a song 'coming back to me'.. '

  • everytime I go to Ypres this song keep comeing back to me.....

  • You have a great voice. Thank you for singing this song. I love Harvey Andrews!!

  • thanks for listening and the note

  • It is Harveys most requested song, beautifully crafted, like soo many of his lesser known ones.

  • hi skip.. happy new year.. hope you have a good one.. this song is brilliant.. as you said, well crafted..

  • THANK YOU, I LIKE YOUR SONG..IT IS FOR ME.

  • yes of course.. its a beautiful song..

  • I have this song on an album, it's remained a favourite throughout the years and never fails to move me. Class!

  • it is one of HA most beautiful..

  • Having lost a great uncle at the Somme, this song sends shivers down my spine. So much feeling

  • the song is truly evocative of the first war.. thank you for taking the time to drop me a special note.. Mike

  • Really lovely rendition excellent guitar thanks..one of my favourite songs.

  • thanks for listening.. this song will stand the test of time for decades to come..

  • OK it's me again, but having listened to this a few more times I can't praise it highly enough. It's similar enough to Harvey's version but the phrasing and tonal quality is different enough to make this a truly wonderful alternative version. It's one of my favourite Harvey tracks and I can give it no better compliment than to say I'd happily listen to this in addition to or as a replacement to the original.

  • hi MACHAWK.. thank you. when i first began to learn this song.. it was a real emotional struggle.. some songs just do that.. a real connection with the sentiments and then it becomes a little more authentic even if its a cover... thanks for listening and taking the time to write a thoughtful note.. cheers Mike

  • Terrific version of a gem of a song.

  • it really is a great song.. thxs

  • Just popped in to listen to you again, just for the sake of it , as an am, you can outplay some of the pros.

    See you at Warwick.

    David

  • Hi David.. how are things.. it would be good to get on stage.. one day.. see you at Warwick.

  • NO! Excuses this year! somehow we WILL find time for a pint or 3 at WFF!

  • And that's a cert!!!

  • Back for another "fix" all the best Skipy

  • cheers Skipy.. M:)

  • Mike, I have come back to this song having tripped across it some time ago on YT. I first heard Harvey perform it in Three Bridges, more years ago than I care to admit. It really touched me then, and your rendition is superb. Thank you for capturing such a wonderful song. I cannot imagine how you got through it. Cheers, Bob, Bingley.

  • Hi Bob.. yes think I wrote somewhere that when I first started learning this song I couldn't get through it.. truely.. a remarkable song and poem.. regards Mike

  • I went to see Harvey in concert tonight and he sang this beautiful song. You do it absolute justice in your own style. A truly sensitive and moving performance Mike.

  • Thanks J M:)

  • A folksinging friend Geoff Bodenham and i were performing together. He refused constant requests for this song. When I asked why he said,' I might later but usually it kills the festive atmosphere. He sang it to finish. He was right, all the revellers stumbled out quietly, some in tears...including me.

  • nice story about a great song.. there are times I couldn't finish the song.. not in public though.. thanks for sending me this lovely note.. kind regards and peaceful xmas.. M:)

  • In my opinion probably the greatest song ever written

  • hi skip.. hard to disagree.. hope you are good!

  • Last November I took a walk though the Battle fields of Belgium & France and this song came to my mind.. you sing it superb - great job my friend

  • That sounds like a very lovely and haunting trip, I should like to do the same some day. thanks for writing. M

  • Excellant enough said

    Paddy P.

  • Many thanks P for your kind words. M

  • I was at a concert many years ago and Harvey told of when Terry Wogan played this song on his radio show.

When it ended there was silence......

Wogan had just collapsed in tears and couldn't continue for a while.

  • I can understand why that happened. when I first began learning it many years ago. I struggled too .. its just an amazing song..

  • Lovely, well played. My stepmother had this sung at her funeral, being one of her favourites. First time I've heard it since, certainly a lump to the throat as the comment below!

  • thank you for that lovely story.. .. mike

  • Probably my all time HA favourite, always brings a lump to the throat!

  • I can remember when I first was learning to play it and not getting through to the end.. "where the sun always shone.. he had faded and gone'..

  • It's always so nice to hear and see that the good songs are still being sung and played! Please allow me to add a little correction. Margarita was actually written by Graham Cooper during his duo time with Harvey, which has always made me like the song even more ... Thanks, Harry

  • Sorry cause, it is written by Harvey and was written after he and Graham split up. I know them both and have verified this.

  • more information.. thanks

  • thanks for that note.. i didn't know that.. still a great, great song.. Mike

  • thankyou so much for this, my history teacher used to sing this and it always brought a tear to the eye. So many memories for this song of the best teacher i ever had and a true friend.

Thankyou so much you just made my day, which so far had been the worst ever.

  • Hi sorry for the late reply.. I've been away from YT.. Hope your day got better and thanks for taking the time to write.. good teachers are a rare find.. regards Mike

  • can i ask, where did you find this song, or hear it?

  • outch!! lol I would have heard it from an album of Harvey Andrews about 30 years ago.. he wrote it.. M

  • i think i am a bit young to know who harvey andrews is, but did he write any other famous songs? I know what a stupid question this may seem like lol

  • Not at all.. he is still doing the folk circuts.. 'google' him and see if he's playing in your area.. maybe get to see him and ask him to sing Margarita..

  • thankyou very much, i will do that. Thanks again for posting this, and have a good day.

  • a pleasure!.. regards M

  • Harvey would be proud.

    Skipy

  • This little video should give you the basic chords, you'll do it mate, it's a cracking song like all of Harvey's are. Cheers! Mike

  • Thanks Skipy.. was this note three months ago!! slipped through the net!!

  • heya

im desperate to learn how to play this

but alas, i can find no tabs :(

any help would be much appreciated

  • Hi Rbulldog.. there is not much on the internet.. I learnt this from an album many years ago so some of the embellishments have been added over the years.. It all depend on what standard of playing your up to what help I might be able to give.. I capo on two and play basic C with runs down to Am to F, Dm and G the 'chorus' has an E7s and D7s .. Tune to standard and follow the song.. it's a rare vid when you can't see the left hand chords.. Have fun..

  • thank you very much man

you have helped a lot im well on my way now =]

    cheers again

  • Soon be Warwick, see you there

    Skipy

  • hi Skipy.. just replied on your channel

  • ( contd)..."This is a true story. For those of you that know it there isn't a chorus, but the 1st verse is repeated at the end; it'd be nice if you could sing along then."

  • thanks.. (contd) lol and for taking the time to post.. cheers Mike

  • That's really good! I've just been listening to some old audios I used to make when I used to tape from the radio in my younger days. Sadly I made loads, but rarely wrote what was on any of them so I never know what's coming up when I play them -- which I haven't done in ages. I've just landed on March 31st, 1982 and Harvey Andrews was on Radio 2 In Concert that night and I taped this great song and Cheeky Young Lad also. As he begins the intro Harvey says:

  • Great story hauntboy.. thanks for the additions.. regards Mike

  • I have a recording from Radio 2's Folk on Two, introduced by Tony Capstick in his laconic south Yorkshire accent, from the late 70s or early 80s. The final segment of the programme was recorded at the Brighton festival in "the magnificent new Brighton Centre" where HA sang: Friends of Mine, Gang of 64 and Margarita. Sadly the tape recorder had a slightly wobbly speed and a rather intrusive automatic gain which wound up the level during periods of silence. I was utterly captivated by Margarita.

  • [cont]

That verse about his old great aunt gets me every time:

She would ask "Is he smiling?"

I would stare at the frame

But the sun was there shining

    Through her window again

    Where that sun always shone

    He had faded and gone

But she would ask "Is he smiling?"

I would say "He's the same".

  • Yeah, this song makes the hairs on the back of my neck stand on end, especially the verse you mention!!

  • i love this song!! please send me the chord porgession. =)

  • lol are you really 107?? The chords are quite simple but I think ts how they are put together with my finger picking. Its a basic C chort run down to F and then G. Second time round the F is a Dm and the middle bit (sorry can't read music) completes with E Am G F C...?? or Gooogle the chords.. if they are available... or I could send you a mini vid and talk you through the song.. let me know.. Mike

  • A beautiful, moving performance. Give us shout sometime, lets play guitar together! Love from Telford!

  • Thanks, That could be a blast. I still get down to Bridgnorth from time to time. Any good festivals or sessions your way?

    Cheers.

  • a how to video or the chords writen over the lyrics would be great. i think a lot of other people would enjoy that as well. and no of course im not 107 =P

  • excellent performance of one of my favourite HA songs - what is the chord progression? - unfortunately your camera angle doesn't quite let me work it out - keep up the good work, and keep Harvey's music alive and kickin'

  • he's a great songwriter.. this is one of my earlier fav's, I'm answering from a internet cafe in wellington but I'll let you know when I get home (if you haven't worked it out by then) M

  • harvey is amaaaze, and this is a beautiful version of one of my favourite songs

    thank you :D

  • i first saw harveys andrews in holdfast camp in belize when he was part of the cse show also with him was jim davidson harvey sant the soldier

  • Fantastic as ever. Saw him Harvey in BAOR in 70's but missed him in France in Aug 2007. Has he recorded Hey Sandy on You Tube?

  • Its one great song thank u for posting.Great to see Harvey on the tube - Last saw Harvey live at the Tramshed in Woolich on the 4th Dec 1977 and he played this song also remember another song - He Played for England Once - it was a magic night - double bill with Dave Pascett if I remember.

  • Brilliant!

I first saw Harvey back in 1972, I have been booking him ever since!

Of all his songs this one is my favorite.

  • He is brilliant. I have played this song sinse I first heard it back then. M:)

  • Isn't Harvey Andrews an excellent singer song writer eh? Love that song so much. You sound a bit like Ralph McTell can you do the 'Streets of London' .?

  • He's a great rwiter of songs. I saw him about 6 months ago. He was brilliant. Ralph is also an all time hero of mine. There is a version up loaded. Cheers. M:)

  • Hi

A very moving rendition of a beautiful song.

My brother is a fan of HA. I'll be sure to recommend your version to him.

    Jim

  • That was truly appreciated - going to search now to see if you have covered HA's Requiem....

    Thank you.

  • I did!! Your fantastic!!! And with 45,000 hits you don't need my ratings!!!!

  • You're on some kind of tear. This is WAAy too easy for you...several songs a day?!

You have to give people a chance to savour you.

    I'm only watching a couple more today...then..well..then only one...and then I'll stop.

    Honest.

    :)

    Thanks for the song.

  • Thanks for your great comments.. It may be worth watching the series from 'you are my sunshine..to black is the colour.. there is a theme.. and it gets darker...
