What's the difference? Who's the better player, Zoot or Ben Webster? Can't we dig them both without getting into the Race crap? Stupid is also stupid. GSU sucks. Don't waste your time or money withe the bigoted trash there..
I saw them both separately this week. Harry Allen with Jim Galloway and Scott Hamilton at Quotes (with CJQ) last night at Quotes on King St. in Toronto.
Both excellent, but S.H. handles his instrustrument like a love of his life!
I love the way these guys have so much to say without having to resort to the altissimo register, maybe its not a modern approach but the effortless execution as well as the content of all of those passages must be admired by all who appreciate good jazz
I went to Rutgers with him and Ralph Bowen. Harry not only blows his face off, but he even won against me in chocolate milk drinking contests... you'll have to ask him about that... LOL Terrific playing!
I like the way Harrys hand movements are very minimal. One of the marks of a great player. Both are great players particularly like the sound of that horn harrys got in his hand.
Fantastic video! I especially enjoy Harry's solo. The stuff he does at the turn arounds were just amazing! I transcribed some of his never-ending runs from this video, and THEY ARE HARD! He made them sound effortless.
I just spent the weekend listening to Harry. He is great and a very nice guy. He is accessible and willing to share ideas with younger players. He is from a better time!!
Every time I hear Harry Allen i think to myself, nobody could play this better. Different, but not better. This guy could directly come out of a time machine from the 40's
It's kind of funny, I love Scott Hamilton but never really cared for Harry Allen. The more I watch this the more I like and appreciate his ideas, and the way he compliments Scott.
Great playing from the two tenors and what a rhythm section. I just love Steve Brown's work, tasteful, listening and swings like mad. Plays for the band and not for himself.

These guys have total control of their instruments. How refreshing that the music of Al and Zoot , et al, is in good hands!

But you do have to ask...70 years from now, will old
white guys be trying to imitate David Murray or
Tupac or some rapper using the same basic lick
vocabulary mixed up in a blender? I hope not.
This music is not offensive but it's quite boring.
At least Zoot Sims had some original licks.

@Roboviewer It's a tribute. They don't play licks all the time.

@Roboviewer Al Cohn actually played with Scott Hamilton and has praised him in interviews as one of his favorite younger players.

You've got another quote at 2:55: Pick-A-Rib, recorded by Benny Goodman with Hampton, Wilson and Krupa. Hurray for Scott Hamilton and Harry Allen
This video is amazing! The bass player is wonderful.
