Polar Bears used to be endangered from over hunting and even with the Innuit killing 400 - 500 every year their numbers have still been increasing. I could find the source again if I had the time but I don't and anyway the Pacific Legal Foundation Lawsuit Challenges the Polar Bear ESA Listing. They use the same figures and it will be settled in court now. What I have found out since though is that nobody actually knows for what the world population was 40 years ago nor todays count.
So marine you have a point that we only have estimates to go on. There hasn't been a survey of the Greenland population for example. Because there are only surveys in some areas and then estimates for the world both sides in the arguement have been making unreasonable claims. For example by comparing the lowest 1960s estimate with the highest estimate today you can come up with a five fold increase. I doubt that they have increased by that much.

Callirocks Polar bears don't usually have to swim that far because it is generally their habit not to go too far from land. They mostly live along the arctic coastlines. They have water-repellent coat and partially webbed feet, which both are adaptations to swimming. Although known individuals recorded swimming about 100 miles or so, they are likely capable of swimming much further if necessary. I wouldn't worry about polar bears becoming extinct from drowning.
Yeah well ice is increasing now. Some years there is more ice and some years less. In Hudson bay this year the ice lasted much longer than usual and the polar bears thrived. Then there was a warm summer and a slightly late refreeze. Now North America and Russia have experienced the worst Blizzards in 100 years. Its called the weather and it changes all the time. Polar bears have survived the medevil warm period perfectly ok too. There is no reason to worry about them in the foreseeable future.

Although known individuals recorded swimming about 100 miles or so, they are likely capable of swimming much further if necessary. I wouldn't worry about polar bears becoming extinct from drowning.

Yeah well ice is increasing now. Some years there is more ice and some years less. In Hudson bay this year the ice lasted much longer than usual and the polar bears thrived. Then there was a warm summer and a slightly late refreeze. Now North America and Russia have experienced the worst Blizzards in 100 years. Its called the weather and it changes all the time. Polar bears have survived the medevil warm period perfectly ok too. There is no reason to worry about them in the foreseeable future.

The abolone fishers in California thought the same thing. They thought shooting sea otters, abolones primary predator, would mean there'd be more abalones. This proved terribly wrong and not only were the sea otters pushed to extinction but the abalones as well. However, the main thing to remember is that Polar Bears aren't going extinct nor are they even on the endangered species list their numbers have increased steadily since the 50s from 5,000 to 25,000 today.

The earh has warmed and cooled for it's entire existance. GW is caused by the interaction between cosmic radiation, which causes more cloud formation, and solar flareups, which deflect the cosmic rays, resulting in the earth warming. Look up "Maunder Minimum, or the "Little Ice Age", which occured in the 1800's. Global cooling is far more a reality, as we are headed into Solar Cyclc 24, and a solar minimum.

The polar bear is not going extint, their numbers are up to over 25,000 now, from around 5,000 in the 1970's. The polar bear is NOT some warm & cuddly thing that smiles and plays music when you squeeze it's tummy.
It is a viscious predator that has been known to stalk a man for over 50 miles, and can swim over 60 miles in one day. They have been around for one hundred thousand years, kicking seal and walrus ass and taking Eskimo's names along the way.
