First of all, all rivals except for him had their relatives appear in their debut appearances (Blue/Green is Prof. Oak's grandson, Brendan/May is Prof. Birch's child, Wally's parents made a cameo in RSE, and Barry is Palmer's son) so the "friend" part is unnecessary.

Second, it's no longer true anyway as his father is confirmed in HG/SS (and in PokéSpe, but that's not canon to the games.)

You're referring to Red, the character that resembles the player in Red/Blue/Yellow. Red's battle theme is the same as Lance's, which I have also done (as a response to this video)

I thought the Rival's default name was ???, not Silver/Gold. Oh well. Speaking of which, in Poe-key-man Battle Revolution, I made ??? and the Hero as some of the trainers. Working on Kris, but can't seem to get it right. The Hero, Gold(I think), came out pretty well. ??? was just a recolor of the Hero. Oh well. If anyone wants to battle in PBR, just PM me.

Here's how I understand it (I may be absolutely correct or dead wrong; believe what you want):

In the first encounter with the Rival, the name's not set, so ??? was used as a sort of placeholder to stop the game from glitching. I think the line "My name is ???" is either a mistranslation or it was misplaced in the game's dialog. It seemed like such an odd line the way it was in the game.

What's fact is that if you leave the name blank when prompted, it'll be interpreted as "SILVER" or "GOLD".

Hm, I never tried that before. Maybe I will with my Gold Version, seeing as it has been broken for a while. It refuses to keep my save. I can save, but if I turn it off and back on, the only options are "New Game" and "Options". I just name my rival ??? every time. Besides the fact that I named my rival in Platinum ???, and, unfortunately, I had to name my character in English as Silvr, since I wanted to name him Goldash in Japanese, but couldn't find the symbols.

The reason his name is ??? is because you have to choos a name for him... and you don't do that till after you batlle him. It would kinda suck if he said: Hi im SILVER lets batlle! and the after you batlle him you just change the name to what you want. This is the first and only game where you choos the name of your rival after you meet him/her
