Phillip Simmons was a incredible man and blacksmith. I had the good fortune to meet him one time in Charleston. it was a sad day in 2009 when this great fellow blacksmith pasted.
In Armenia there is a very old legend (over 2000 years) connected with blacksmith's tradition to ring the anvil 3 times in the early morning to stеgthen the chains of the evil prince
Thank you for celebrating our SC treasure. His last name is pronounced with the short i vowel sound. Having met him, I can attest to his being a true gentleman. We miss him here but his work reminds us of his spirit.
it was smacked around days ago, but no one committed to do it, and the weekend was coming, i did not want the idea to die, so i pushed it on 4 blacksmiths lists/sites and did what i could do to make it happen. but it is definitely a movement to make this happen each time we lose a smith, i not sure of the number of rings, some say 3, but i have noticed a few mentions of the #3 and the devil, i know we play with fire, but the devil is no friend of mine, i can get in enough trouble on my own.

The number three is associated with the trilogy, Christ, Mary and Joseph. The basic family model of life and the light of God.
I like your shop, looks a lot like mine.

fwiw,
Nothing new, this is a tradition that has been practiced for as long as I've been involved in smithing.....(20years) and it goes way beyond that, IMO.
Sometimes the ashes of the smith are added into the "firing up of a coal forge".

Littlewolf....is this something that you came up with? It's a great idea to honor the people of the craft.
