  • This is difficult but i will be able to do it someday!!!!

  • Are those the name of the letters or the way to prononce them?

  • Hmm. I would applaud you on the video and trying to learn the language, but I can't get beyond paper bag Hitler- even it you burned it after you made this video.

  • The d thing, (I'm calling it that because my phone does not have the capability of typing it, not because i'm an idiot.) sounds like a th, with vocal cords rather than just air. Like 'the' or 'that' at least, that's what I've heard. I'm not Icelandic, just trying to learn the language so don't take my words as law..

  • my god..the language is soo hard! but it's really nice :)

  • @SamTalmadge thanks :)

  • somebody told me i have to speak the "Ð" like "th" is that right?

  • @moddingqueen like the th in the. Not thin.

  • @moddingqueen no, þ is like th. ð is often replaced with d but they are not pronounced the same.

  • are these the short or long sounds?

  • Your Icelandic lessons are OK. Haven't seen them done better (so far so good) on Youtube.

But: PLEASE SKIP YOUR RETARDED, INSULTING JOKES. YOU' RE NOT AT ALL FUNNY ESP. YOUR DISGUSTING HITLER. THAT GUY WAS RESPONSIBLE FOR THE ORGANISED KILLING OF THE FAMILY OF JEWISH FRIENDS OF MINE DURING THE 2ND WORLD WAR AND YOU HAVE HIM AS A PIN-UP ON YOUR WALL? I live in Europe and know from Jewish friends what deep scars this war inflicted. It doesn't mean I agree with what they're doing now in Israel.

  • @Jofph It's a bit rich to take offense when you've used 'retarded', the same word used to denigrate millions of physically and mentally disabled people who were also victims during WWII. You obviously didn't see the big picture of what your Jewish friends went through.

  • @cherubz2 if you can't laugh at hitler, he wins. he is responsible for killing a lot of people, including a large part of my family. i won't let him win.

  • What is your sheep saying no to?

  • Já já svona er þetta.

  • I am jewish and I am learning Icelandic because my mind is free of preconcept like Dalai Lama Thank you for uploading this video

  • 0:35 sounded like you farted

  • @KeeweeNerd That's really cool, actually. I've never heard of it, and Google results nothing on denjúsku (or denjúska). I so want to research this. If I'm not being intrusive, where are you in NZ?

  • Thank you for posting this, it was educational and interesting but there no letter Z in the Icelandic alphabet?

  • @boidbath The Zeta has been discontinued for use in the alphabet and removed completely, as the pronunciation of S and Z are practically the same and there are no definite rules on which one to use, its use felt random and just unnecessary . Some people still use the Z in carefully selected words to sound old fashioned and/or intelligent, or do it by tradition, but in reality there are no pronunciation differences in "Íslenzka" and "Íslenska". (Íslenska = Icelandic)

  • Thumbs down. Poor pronunciation and accent.

  • It's all correct... but you want to say þ differently, you want to have it shorter and kinda spit it out

  • are you saying the names of the letters or the sounds the letters make?

  • Thx I'm just learning and it's nice to here sombody say the alphabet without the accent so I know how I would and should sound

  • luv da' sheep

  • Wow I learned from this video! Thanks

  • This is awesome! Very helpful :D

  • Thanks for this, your a rockstar! Making it bearable to learn!

  • I was doing so well until you got to Y. xD

  • hae paypar baguh hitlar!!!

  • I think Icelandic language is the easiest to learn

  • @purplerain613 Urm, where do you come from then, the Faroe Islands?

  • @DroppedG huh....no....

  • @purplerain613 whats the name of the letter "H" in the Icelandic alphabet? THEN it will come to you :)

  • @DragonCoasterStorm it's "há" , pronounces like the english word "how"

  • @cherubz2 Paperbag Hitler is from a project I did back in high school (say, 4 years ago) involving WW2 leaders.

  • you don't pronounce it thorn. where'd you get this? wikipedia?

  • @meandvmarsequalsno1 No, actual Icelanders. Take it up with them.

  • they probably meant how to say the letter, not how to use it. meaning that when thorn is in a word it doesn't sound like thorn, it's 'th'

  • @meandvmarsequalsno1 That I knew... þ = IPA /θ/. I know i haven't perfected Icelandic pronunciation, but I'm pretty sure I pronounce þ the way it should be. How did I say it differently?

  • i don't even know how to answer "How did I say it differently?", when it isn't even gramatically correct. it's not worth arguing. you may have said the letter correctly, but others will take it differently. please don't inform people incorrectly, because you'll make it harder for them.

  • @Mizenki17 you pronounce icelandic quite well Btw Þ is Pronounced Þorn and a little info if an english men wanted to say Þ it's often though Th (Þór: Thor)

  • @Mizenki17 You're right, to pronounce it like the English word "thorn" is correct ;). A bit like the fact that the letter "w" is said "double-you" in the alphabet, but when used in a word it isn't (i.e. you wouldn't say "how" like "hodubilyoo"). I think meandvmarsequalsno1 misunderstood what this video is about :Þ

  • @Mizenki17 I'm Icelandic and you did pronounce it just the way it should be.

  • @meandvmarsequalsno1 he is saying the name of the letter the correct way. it's like in english you say H like "age" but in a word it sounds like "h"

  • @IcelandicGirl1994 That was my point. Exactly.

He is saying it as a word. Just like you said H as a word is "age", but in a word it's H as a sound, not "age".

  • this guys gay but nice alphabet.

  • I <3 Paperbag Hitler!

  • Vv = Voaff! x'D Sorry, just sonds funny x3

Icelandic is a really cool language owo

  • This is awesome! Thank you for posting this. I've just started learning the icelandic language...It seems difficult but I enjoy learning it. Cheers!

  • you look just like your paper bag hitler. lol

  • whats the different between ú and ó soundwise? they sound exactly alike.

  • Ó and ú are both very similar to the two sounds in the English word 'tofu'.

  • ó sounds like you say o and ú sounds like you would say oo like in soon

  • Hi ive recently decided to try and learn a new language and ive always been interested in Iceland. Im starting at the basics with the language and i just have a quick question. How exactly is L pronounced, I'm hearing it as elk with the Icelandic accent behind it. Thank you

  • A single L is simly prononced as L. A double L is most often pronounced as DL but sometimes it is pronounced as LL.

I think Icelandic spelling is rather easy to master because most of the words are spelled just like they are pronounced. This might be one of the reasons illiteracy is practically non-existent in Iceland. Obviously it is much more difficult for natives to learn how to read and write English than Icelandic.

I am icelandic and have lived in Iceland most of my life.

  • Ég er líka að læra íslensku, en vissi ég ekki hvernig að segja stafina, svo takk kærlega fyrir.

My biggest problem is that I can't trill my rs properly, and I'm despairing of ever picking it up.

  • I'm just wondering, how did you come to learn Icelandic? I'm British, and I've become really fascinated with this language (Along with Swedish), I just find that Iceland looks like a beautiful country, and the language seems it too, so, that's why I'm trying to learn it. =D

  • I honestly forget how I got interested in Icelandic... but I ended up buying a book on it, and from there it went.

  • hei anne på lovund

  • Hm, I just learned my name, Thnx. :]

  • The dont use Zz

  • No, it was removed from the alphabet in the 70s.

  • um, what was it used for? the voiced variant of s? or perhaps a "ts" as in German or Italian? though i'm not sure wether Icelandic has a "ts" at all... or was it maybe even sth even more fancy?

  • how can i represent icelandic characters with the english alpabet?

  • You really can't... properly, at least. If you must, you can replace accented characters with the unaccented ones, replace þ with t (or th, I think) and replace ð with d (maybe dh?)

However, I HIGHLY recommend that you don't.

  • how did you get the characters just now

  • You can install the US international keyboard, or memorize ALT codes.

Hold done the ALT key, and then on the number pad (NOT THE NUMBER ABOVE THE LETTER KEYS), type in the combinations.

  • Ahh, they don't have a Q.

I've learned a very limited amount of Icelandic, but I get very confused by the pronunciation it tells me on words... probably because I don't really understand the phonetics.

Is Icelandic as phonetic as say, German, once you get used to the sounds?

  • Yep. Just takes some practice to read. =]

  • Hi paperbag hitler! HAHAHA XD you're the best!

  • Wow, do you know how hard it is to find pronunciations of the Icelandic alphabet? Seriously. Thanks for putting this up.

I probably won't start taking Icelandic for several years, but I'd like to know some now. I want to take German, which I'm signed up for this year, and Russian before I move onto this beautiful language. So many awesome languages, so little time.

You seem to have really good pronunciations. How are you learning it?

    Oh, and hi Icelanders!

  • :] Glad I helped. German is fun, I took it for two years.

I learn Icelandic through a book and CD set I have... and a bunch of Icelandic friends who correct me nonstop. :D

  • Any recommendations on book/cd sets? I'm thinking about actually taking it up during the school year, although I won't have much time. I'm too excited about learning it to wait until I'm out of school and not taking another language. I don't have any Icelandic friends though, unfortunately. It will be fun. For now I can at least practice cussing :)

  • The 'Teach Yourself' series has a book/CD set that is pretty good. No book or CD can be perfect, but it's pretty good and great with pronunciation.

Get MSN. And start talking to people online. Some of the random Icelanders I met on YouTube are good friends of mine now. Rammsteinfreak93 rocks my world. :]

  • "cuz i said so" xD adorable, great accent compared to the other english pple who iv triet to teach xP

  • Why thank you!

  • Great job!

I've just started learning Icelandic, and I find learning the alphabet really difficult. But this is really helpful, so thank you! :D

  • You're welcome, and good luck with Icelandic. :]

  • Gahh I wish I could speak Icelandic, or German.

  • please don't use (bad) translation engines:

"you are defacing the icelandinc language. and hitler was a mad slaughterer who killed a major part of his home-country's people."

got rid of the german guy that ripped of the head of the wax-hitler in madame tussaud's in berlin ? I think he's a hero ! (the guy - not hitler)

  • I didn't use an engine, I had an Icelander translate it for me. xD I guess he didn't know some proper translations.

  • loly funny

  • Lol, that's cool ^^.

You got the whole Icelandic alphabet right.. Wow, even I can't do that and I'm Icelandic. xD

    Haha ^^

    Great job =)

  • Takk!

  • you are steal iceland languge!!

and hitler not very good man!!! hitler kill people in war!!!!!!

ÞÚ ERT AÐ STELA ÍSLENSKU TUNGUNNI! OG HITLER ER SLÆMUR MAÐUR, HANN DRAP MIKIÐ AF FÓLKI Í SEINNI HEIMSSTYRJÖLDINNI.

  • Ég er ekki að stela íslensku tungunni. Það geta allir lært tungumál, þetta er ekki þjófnaður!

Og ég styð ekki Hitler - þetta er brúða sem ég á síðan ég bjó hana til í skólaverkefni fyrir mörgum árum. Lærðu að taka gríni.

  • You steal iceland languge!!!

you laugh at people die in war hitler not good man and you steal iceland languge you should be ashame of you self and stop steeling and you love swasatika

  • I don't steal it! It's a language, no one owns it! I do not laugh at them, I just said that I do not support Hitler. And swastika was originally a sign of peace, but that is not the point. Don't make assumptions about me.

I am done talking to you, as you have proven that you are immature. Age means nothing - you let your emotions run your mind and are just making a fool of yourself. Goodbye.

  • You're funny
