try using a renuzit air freshener. it makes a silence mute. i made 2 of them. they don't change pitch, just make it to where you could play in the midst of sleeping babies.

make sure you have some closed-cell foam weather stripping and some cotton balls to fill it with. your bottle mute is flattening the sound a bit.

a mute should change the sound of your horn not make the sound softer i recommend a TrumCor mute which run about $65 but sound great

Dude you gotta understand that coke bottles are made for holding coke in it, different trumpet mutes are designed to give the trumpet different sounds, if you get a straight mute you'll get a more tinny sound, if you get a practice mute you'll get a softer sound, if you get a harmon or an extending tube mute you'll get a more sexy sound and you can make it go wah wah with your hand, you can't just shove some coke bottle in the bell and call it a mute

uhmm dude u kinda gotta know what a mute is to make this work. first of all by shoving a bottle in ur bell ur probably fuckin up the shape of it which will change the sound if ur not careful. second of all the air has nowhere to go therefor u cant blow into the trumpet and u may also put too much pressure on the slides. why did u think of this anyways? didnt a peice of tissue paper come to mind before a coke bottle wrapped in a freakin spiderweb around ur trumpet?
