@magicstorm1 killed few million people through war? causes the first "world war" merssilesly kill russian austrian and muslim prisinors. Oh and he was a greedy son of a bitch. although he was great man, general, the guy he was preety bad.
Everything good you can say for napoleon can also be said to hitler although hitler was even more bad ass
@IBrokeRules1and2lulz you forgot all his reforms , the napoleon civil code of law for france , the fact during thoses 20 odds years a man was valued by his prowess instead then being born to , the fact he saved the french republic . It can be argued that he was the one who wanted to expand france or his ideas thruout europe but it remain everytimes peace was prononced in europe it was because Napoleon had defeated the coallition against him. I would not rank him among the such of hitlers
@IBrokeRules1and2lulz But I would easily rank him among peoples such as Julius caesar , hannibal In caesar case nobody see him as the Anti Christ but he clearly got an immense fortune from waging an illegal war against Gaul it is estimated about 1 millions gauls died during the gallic wars and 1 millions were made slaves. I don't see Napoleon as an Hero but I see him as an idealistic just as Caesar was whit his publics reforms and war waging and I thank him for not living under a Monarchy
@magicstorm1 He was called by contemporaries as the anti-christ because he was going against the rest of europe. France was a republic, the rest of europe were comprised of monarchies, and they believe he upset the god-given rights of their kings or what-not.
Does anyone know what those little square rags are that keep getting kicked into the air every time a cannon fires? Are they to keep the powder dry or something?
God, yes they did have fuses! Fuses existed since pyrotechnics were used in warfare. The concept of lighting it directly is just so that it's more accurate on hits. Imagine cavalry passing trough your line of fire, would you use a fuse?
-No, because you'd never know when the canon would exactly fire and there are chances you wouldn't hit at the right time.
A fuse is basicly a rope covered witha bit of tar and gunpowder, so it's not something so dumb to think off, in those days.
What I've seen about canon replicas, the gunpowder lays just over cannon surface. And so on canon fires immediately. Yes it's possible that same cannons had fuse and some ones didn't.
I don't understand what Napoleon says at 0.33 "Ready with the ..." and the soldiers respond throw ----", so could anynone tell me what is that word that to me sounds like ratles or hadles?... i'm learning english so don't make fun of me. thanks :)
Looks to be an excellent show. That's the BBC of course. So, we will never see it in France! Our documentary and fictions are so poor since 15 years...
since when do 24 pounders jump as high as that? that type of cannon built with the stability of the back tow and the side wheels usually helps prevent recoil as big as that?
Amazing he did those trigometric functions in his head, from the span of time he closed his eyes to when he calculated distance and time, took only at best a few seconds. This is on top of sustained sleep deprivation from the battle before.
High school students today would struggle with that even including calculators, and 8 hrs of sleep.

When they hear the word "Waterloo", Europeans think of defeat not victory (or they are brits)

There weren't any fuse those days. When the lighter touched the cannon shot came less than in a second.

Oh but I didn't say they used it on cannons. These days they used fuses like on fougasse.

Fuses were quite common, they were often used in grenades and some types of artillery ammunition; such as shells and shrapnel shot.
