Thx Nancarrower for reminding me of B's situation when he wrote this (have you read "The Naked Face of Genius"?). I just commented, re the fugue from this piece played by Gidon Kremer (a great violinist who still, in this, didn't satisfy me), that I've yet to find my ideal version. Maybe this is it! Don't think I'd even heard of Grimal before. Hope his performance is available on CD (just too old, I guess, to get w/ down-loaded magnetic 0s and 1s on a computer or other delicate gadget).
this guy is beast. BUT WHERE DID HE GO? it seems like his youtube videos are a all a few years old, and it's hard to find stuff on him on the internet... he must not be one for a lot of attention.
Very nice. I've grown up on the Nigel Kennedy version and this is at least as good. Maybe better.
It's amazing to think of the conditions under which Bartok wrote this piece that's so demanding of the performer and listener. He was unhappy and poor in a strange new land, dying of leukaemia, seeing his home country overrun by the Nazis and surely forseeing a future under Stalin's control. I wouldn't even get out of bed.
is it just me or is his shoulder very, very tense? Everything else about his technique is amazing! The rest of his body seems relaxed, but his shoulder is very elevated to compensate for a long neck but no shoulder rest. Shoulder rests basically help us violinists with longer necks hold the instrument while keeping our shoulder from raising unnecessarily
It seems wedged in his collar very firmly and his arm must be doing the rest to hold it up, I'm just amazed he can downshift without any difficulty. Remember all the great players from yesteryear never used shoulder rests.
i dont typically watch this sort of video here (just watched a marilyn manson tune) but this was truely amazing and i am glad i stumbled unto this. thanks for posting it.
Thank you very much. Great interpretation. Simply the best violin Bartok I have ever heard, Sir Menuhin inclusive. :)Only one question-where are other 3 parts? And where I can hear your other recordings? I like your left hand, the way how your fingers are touching the string, not vertically. It makes thinking about Ysaie:) I´m sure, you play his Sonates too. I have also big hand, but I´m a cellist, and it´s pleasant to see such hand on the violine.
yeh, the shoulder rest actually makes certain bowing techniques much harder, when my teacher taught me how to hold the violin properly ie. without a shoulder rest, it felt perfectly normal and now, i would never resort to using that shoulder rest again !
Actually you can keep the violin up without a shoulder rest. I have very small hands but I play without a chin rest and shoulder rest. I also know tons of violinist who play without the shoulder rest regardless of the size of their hands.
can u share some ''secrets'' of holding violin up without shoulder rest? always wanted to play without shoulder rest, but doesn't rally work...have to long neck,i think...
yeah there's no way you can keep the violin up on its own without something... notice his hand is so enormous he can always keep is thumb under the neck even in those insanely high notes.
afraid ... need ... Exorcism....O.o

Tastefully done. Simply Awesome.
Also interesting to see a younger player who doesn't use a shoulder rest.
