The military is entirely unique and all militaries discriminate based on what they feel would be detrimental to good order and discipline. if you allow openly gay service, you then have to allow transgendereds, transexuals, etc. military service is difficult enough without it being a freakshow. if you're so consumed with your gayness that you can't serve without announcing it to the world, then the military is not for you.

Here's what you don't get - there's a very good reason why men and women don't serve in front-line combat zones together....the distraction of RELATIONSHIPS can get people killed. Same with gays. @usamericanz I do. I worry about my best friend's brother who's serving in Afghanistan. I worry about friends I have serving in the Coast Guard. They could really use people like my Arabic-speaking friend who was dismissed from the military because of DADT. Said friend was known to be gay within his unit, which was a front-line combat unit, but he never had a problem with relationships or being distracted. Gay people don't automatically form relationships with everyone with a penis.

there have also been alcoholic arab translators drubbed out of the service as well as arab translators who couldn't pass the fitness test or failed a drug test. guess what? the military went out and found arab translators that were NOT distractions to their unit or to the mission. just because you have a valued MOS doesn't mean you get to jeopardize the lives of those with you in combat. if you REALLY think openly gay soldiers won't be distracting, then all I can say is YOU NEVER SERVED.

Would you have the same policy if a service member was racist and found the Latino man in his unit a distraction? That could put lives at risk too, simply because people are idiots and bigoted. Homosexuals are currently allowed to join the military.....They just are not allowed to state that they are homosexual. There are currently homosexuals in the military that are great soldiers, sailors, etc. The issue is, a slim majority of those serving still do not want to hear about what homosexuals do in their bedrooms. So if you are homosexual and want to serve your country then go for it, but there is no need for it to be proclaimed.

People have to make the decision to go into the army in the first place, and if they are gay makign that choice , they might choose not to. that creates even less of a percentage of gays in the forces that are willign to fight for what they think is right.
