I heard a anecdote years ago that the reason they had to cast another actor as 'the Monster' was because Boris Kaloff (like Lon Channey jr) felt the pairing of the Universal Monsters with Bud & Lou demeaned them. However... some time later, his dear friend Charles Laughton told him of how much fun he had whilst filming his movie with them, and so lamented his decision! So much so, that he went on to do TWO A&C Features! (One of the few big name actors to do more than one!)
Lou Costello, at the start did not want to make this movie..He felt the teaming with the monsters was beneath the comedy team..But in fact after this movie's great audience reception it revived Abbott & Costello's slumping career..According to Bela Lugosi Jr. this film was shot on a very gloomy, depressing set..Therefore Universal hired comics along with Abbott & Costello to try to provide laughs for the rest of the cast and crew..
It would be better if you were able to see the scene. It is very dark...obviously a copy of a copy of a copy. Glenn Strange is behind Costello as Frankenstein and when Lou sits on his lap, Strange could not keep a straight face. That's him you7 hear laughing.
@MrFrontrowkid Yeah, wasn't the story that Strange just couldn't stop laughing whenever he saw Costello during the filming of A&CMF and that Costello got mad when they were filming one scene and asked Strange why he was laughing, and that Strange explained that he just couldn't help it because he thought Costello was hilarious even when he was just standing still not doing anything, and that during the rest of the film Costello was always trying to make Strange LHAO?
@35westst Lugosi was probably glad to get this part since he hadn't been doing very much for some time. He took his part very seriously and didn't appreciate the jokes and kidding around on the set. He felt it was unprofessional. It was done to keep up the creative energy.
Lon Chaney looks pretty good-natured here. He supposedly thought Abbott and Costello ruined the Universal Pictures monsters by making clowns out of them.
@silkmann My grandfather was born in 1926, so he was a young man when this came out. But thats awesome that your grandfather got to share in such an amazing experience!
also on youtube is a three part this is your life episode dedicated to lou costello. he was a great man who helped many others. i highly recommend you seek it out. it is worth your time and effort.
Dear Audioal, There are more outakes from"A&C Meet Frankenstein"..but..it has Lou and Lonnie Chaney,Jr. using swear words that the heads of You Tube wouldn't permit to be seen here.Including one outake..Where Lonnie's"Larry Talbot"uses a swear word that I'm sure didn't endear him to the church.
Wow, its so cool t osee these old bloopers, I didnt even think anyone would have these anymore, thanks. PS, Im 21 years old and not even close to being from around that time in age but that goes to show how much of an influence they have been on america :)
