The Falklands is nothing like the situation in Iraq. Whatever you else you might say about the war, the people of the Falklands are British and deserved the support of our forces when they were invaded.
I wouldn't take Wiki as a great source for accuracy. Regardless, the Falklands war was a terrible war orchestrated between both the British and Argentine governments to booster support for their deep unpopularity. The British couldn't give a toss about the islanders - to the point that the islanders received all its needs from Argentina. Neither country had the interests of the people at heart, but then, they never do. Electoral victory means more than the lives of real people.
The absurdity is making them choose between two oppressive powers. Britian had long since forgotten about this lost part of Empire until it was convenient for its ends. Canada's confederation was in 1867. The Falkland Islands have been under British rule since 1833. For the British to have ceded authority over he islands to the invading Argentines in 1982 would make about as much sense and Canada giving their nation back to their indigenous people. Thats quite OK. I have read several books on the Falklands and the Argentine thinking behind their actions is very interesting.They were convinced we would never fight. They assumed that when the British discovered the islands occupied we would do nothing and neither would the wider world. The only thing that would have shifted them was force. Sad but true.

Regardless, the Falklands war was a terrible war orchestrated between both the British and Argentine governments to booster support for their deep unpopularity. The British couldn't give a toss about the islanders - to the point that the islanders received all its needs from Argentina. Neither country had the interests of the people at heart, but then, they never do. Electoral victory means more than the lives of real people.

Point is thatcher knew a potential situation was going to break out. She stood down the military and navy so that it could be considered a notable deployment or "war". She didn't care for the lives of the soldiers or the lives of the falklanders and simply cared more about her political neck.
One squaddy, horrifically burnt in the Falklands War,
Was approached by Prince Charles during a presentation.
"Get well soon" said the Prince, to which the squaddy replied,

I still blame Thatcher. If you think a war is impending, you stockpile supplies, weapons and ready the troops. You don't move the army out then launch a propaganda campaign unless you are trying to sway public appeal.
Thatcher didn't give a toss about the falklanders and cared more about improving her image and securing the '83 election. In that sense it is like Iraq as arguably bush would not have gotten elected had the war not happened.

Great stuff. The Falklands Soldiers on BOTH sides were conned unfortunately by there supposed leaders . Brave men but a pointless war.Thatchers Govt knew that there was an Argentine threat, so they moved the troops out and the Navy away until they invaded. When the same threat happened in the 70s Callaghan sent extra forces there and the situation was dissipated. It was a War to improve Thatchers Poll ratings and to win the 1983 election. I respect the Solidiers, but they were pawns in a game.

Si yo fuera presidente lo haría hasta tenerlas, el país mejora totalmente, los ingleses deberían cuidar esa guarnición que tienen, porque si se van tmabien se va con ellos la British rule, asi va a ser siempre, porque las islas no son de ellos, si sos socialista o algo asi, porque no vas a Venezuela a vivir o todavía mejor, a Corea del Norte!!!
