I actually like this version more than Argerich, because Argerighc's own is so fast that it's not that easy to enjoy the piece... But I guess this is a pure matter of opinion (emotion vs technique etc.)
I realize more than most will know how important passion is in a performance, but where I lack technical ability my sister is a technical master....this fellow is super...some think you're not brilliant at what you do if you don't look like you're having a stroke on stage!!
@Sepharite i have to agree. His technique is wonderful and his percussive playing is so accurate and clean but i feel like he could treat the legato lines with more care. Prokofiev, whilst wild and nuts is also stunningly beautiful and the longer lines need to be an echoing of the strings and woodwind that prokofiev addord so much :). Fantastic performance though and a really well thought out approach :D
He's so incisive and to-the-point that the energetic parts to seem mechanical instead of electric. For instance, from 1:30 to 1:54, those chords are incredibly staccato; they lack the drama and urgency with which Prokofiev infused them. There's no doubting his technical proficiency, but if he wants to be one of the great pianists of his generation, he'll have to do more than just play the notes accurately. If you compare this with Argerich, the difference in vitality is massive.
@ProRachStravinsKiev Hey isn't this guy competing in the upcoming Tchaikovsky Competition once again? He's listed as one of the competitors! I wonder how he'll do: I will be closely watching him through the web cast
the three people who did not like this preformance have to give 3 reasons to convince me that this preformance is bad. otherwise, they have to fix their brain.
I just finished LEARNING the 1st mvmt this summer. LEARNING is different that POLISHING it. Of course, I'm not playing it perfectly. I'm not a professional pianist yet, so what exactly are you expecting of me? I'm just a regular 16 year old high school student.
There was nothing wrong with the comment! I didn't give it a bad rating! I was being a mock-teacher, not finding fault with you or your work-load. I am aware that note-learning is different from polishing. I may be a mere regular 15 year old high school student, but I'm no ignoramus. Christ, I have no idea why you freaked out like that.
Etude12, i can tell you why chrissy "freaked out" with your comment. While it may not have been ill-intentioned, there is simply SO MUCH negativity floating around when it comes to commenting on classical music performance YT vids. Look around if you don't believe me. Good on ya both for being teens with such a keen interest in classical music, though! :-)
Good for you especially, Chrissy - it's an awesome piece!!
What a WONDERFUL performance of this piano concerto!
But eh ... Without image it would even be better; the conductor is TERRIBLE to watch, but the orchestra sounds nice so he is skilfull does not know how to move his arms.
The pianist is also not a show man; pity, because he is probably one of the best performers!
In april I visited his piano concert at St.Petersburg, and I was lucky to get his autograph. That was wonderful, unforgettable evening. Bravo Alexander! Thank you very much
echipafantoma, would you mind pointing out all the 'little insignificant mistakes' that my untuned ear could not hear? i thought that it was quite a nice interpretation of a very technically challenging piece. Well done chief!
Anybody who has tried to play this piece knows how virtuosic it is. The first part anybody ever tries, of course, is that fantastic allegro. Any amount of expressiveness at that velocity is rare; Lubiantsev's rendering is manful and more than sufficient for its purposes.
Is not the human brain marvelous in conception and execution?
We take it for granted, but (so far) human music is unique.
