  • wtf is the system is this a review form the books

  • @comerto852 sorry I dont understand, please ty to re-phrase that so the sentence makes sense.

  • @cptmachine i meant what was the system you mention and i realized it was a rpg how about a review of the books man keep the good work

  • @comerto852 The rules for the game use a system known as BRP (basic role play) which is a mathetical way to dictate success and failure of actions, The setting is based heavily on Lovecrafts work.

  • @cptmachine yah now i now can you do a chtulhu mithos review please looks like you know about them man

  • @mrcool242 who would've thought the two could be possible together hehe.

  • Theres not really as much of a change in language, HP Lovecraft just loved using flowery language, which still exists today, some people just don't get it, and don't want to because it's challenging material. Unfortunately in this day and age, easier alternatives to reading draw peoples' attention, which is well and good once in a while, but with now stimulation, the brain tends to turn from tissue to ichor...

  • augutus gloop

  • man sweet vid call of cthulhu is my fave regular xbox game one new sub =]

  • Well...you're not umming an arring anymore but you are making shifty glances to your fact sheets. LOL. I do jest. Great review.

  • he worte a lot of sci-fi and horror not fantasy

  • @the8lbfish Then you never read his Dreamlands stuff

  • @cptmachine i am in the middle of devoring his works but i havent come across much of hsi dreamcycle books yet more into his horror right now loved the "color out of space"

  • Dagon's one of my favourites as well. It's perhaps the best example of a Lovecraftian tale, being utterly strange and disturbing, yet completely ridiculous at the same time ("I'm chucking myself out of the window as a write!"). Good stuff.

  • Wow, I've never heard anyone put Lovecraft like that. Personally, I'm a huge fan of his, Read all his fiction & think he's a master of horror. I'm a bit less of a fan of his surreal fantasy but still enjoy it.

Good note on mentioning that Lovecraft was big on sharing his cycle as he called it with anyone who'd like to use it.

COC is a great game too, IMO.

  • Will it be Rare. ? $

  • i have found your coc review very intresting it actually helped me make my legacy of kain roleplaying sesion

  • Next time please give a warning that your review contains spoilers. I stopped watching your review after you spoiled "Dagon" for me.

  • Dagon was written over 80 years ago so I doubt it can really be called a spoiler, but sorry. In all honesty alot of Lovecrafts works are the basis for modern horror so with a few exceptions you will have heard it before.

  • I've just read Dagon, and your review actually did not spoil anything. My apologies! Are there any references to other Lovecraft stories that might spoil them in your review? If not, I'll gladly continue watching it; it seemed interesting.

  • To be honest I am not that well red on lovecraft so I dont think I do that any more.

  • . .

  • thank you dude, nice review, btw. you should read Lovecraft's "how to pronounce Cthulhu" :p INFIDEL :p just kidding

  • Does anyone know of any ways to contact CoC players in the UK. I'd like to start a group in the South west.

  • im actually scottish, i play it sometimes great game.

  • I think it was August Derlethe who started calling it the "Cthulhu Mythos", but don't quote me on that. He definantly kept Lovecraft's writings alive until they caught on (Even though his own were rather horrible).

Perhaps I'll go look it up later.

  • Really cause I feel really tight myself...

Oh dear if your going to insult me I recommend learning the language. epix fail.

  • xD it was a great review, even though i was looking for the Game Review. But this sparked my interest.

  • Everybody, less talking about Lovecraft and more talking about the game. Yes its based on the Cthulhu mythos, but no love for poor Jack Walters? :(

  • I've only started running this game about a year ago and have been hooked on CoC and Lovecraft ever since.

As for Lovecraft's writing: compared to for example E.A. Poe it's relatively easy to read.

For slightly more heroic, pulpy and notably easier to read Mythos stories you might want to check out the Mythos writings of Robert E. Howard, writer of Conan and correspondent of Lovecraft.

  • You have been hooked on CoC? Sorry, it just sounds funny for obvious reasons.

  • *rolls eyes* hooked on see-oh-see

  • Oh, that's clever, that is. "Coc"... wow. Did you giggle after you thought of it too?

  • @uglyengineer No, why do you ask?

  • Hi, great video - Enjoyed watching and listening your review. By the way, the term Cthulhu Mythos was coined by Lovecraft's friend and colleague, writer Algernon Blackwood. I myself am a veteran of roleplaying games, and Call of Cthulhu was without question my favorite! "Yog-Sothothery?" I've never heard that! Thank you for mentioning it! Take care and be well.

  • Algernon Blackwood was an influence on Lovecraft (particularly his stories THE WILLOWS and THE WENDIGO); the term Cthulhu Mythos was coined by Lovecraft's protege August Derleth, who also founded Arkham House (with Donald Wandrei) to keep Lovecraft's work in print.

  • Oh, yes! You're right! Thank you for correcting my error! I mistook Blackwood for Derleth. Thanks gomro, I appreciate it! Take care!

  • "I mumble when I put it in front of my mouth" and then one second later you put it in front of your mouth and keep it there for ages :O

  • Not sure where the analogy between Shakespeare and Lovecraft came from. Shakespeare = 99% speech based, Lovecraft = 99% text based.

It's a good review, but it's far too waffly mate. Four minutes into this and you've just spoilt Dagon, and you've only touched on the main topic.

  • Many thanks for the review, I do tend to woffy, I'm trying to sort that out, however I am sorry to anyone who I ruined Dagon.

The comparison of shakespeare to lovecraft is how the english language doesnt age well depending on how old or complex a work is.

  • Okay then, I accept that, and anyway I am not going to get into an argument about that (although I don't agree with you :P ) as it's not relevant to CoC :D

Thanks for your reply too, good to see some feedback from the person submitting the review. Don't get me wrong, I actually like your reviewing chatting style, it's just the waffly bits are well..waffly. Keep up the good work !

  • I like these sort of games. I just like reading about the monsters and the spells in the game. I heard that using spells in "Call of Cthulhu" drains your sanity in the game :(

  • Yes since casting spells alters the universe the investigator took for granted most do indeed require a sanity roll, the more outlandish the more sanity lost.

  • Never role played before, but I'm obsessed with Lovecraft, ordered the books, cheers for the head up!

  • "Golden Age of Roleplaying", I like that label and I agree with it.

Yes, things were simpler, and cheaper, and a lot more poetic then...especially when compared to now:

Tons and tons of useless and unplaytested roleplaying supplements churned out by WoTC and WW, catering solely to the collector's market. Pathetic really...

CoC is a classic, but more than that...in my opinion it's the best RPG ever made...

BTW, I'm currently running Masks of Nyarlathotep.

  • Best of luck with Masks, I hear its harsh on your players.

  • Check the YSDC forums now!

  • I'm known both for my GMing abilities and for my PC-killing tendencies.

I'm pretty harsh on my players in anything we play...and we've been playing together for years...

I'm pretty sure they know what they're in for ;)

P.S: The Room 405 fight turned into one of the clumsiest blood-baths ever. Imagine the final scene in Taxi Driver for goriness...

but my players loved it (even though one of the PCs almost got his arm cleaved off...fortunately the Pranga got stuck in the bone).

  • Well done on the review, and thanks for the mention!

The term 'Cthulhu Mythos' is attributed to August Derleth, founder of Arkham House.

Your video review inspired me to write to Chaosium to see about getting MULAs in through Yog-Sothoth for better UK distribution. We shall see....

  • Let me know if you pull that off and you have a customer for life.

  • I have always heard about this blasted "thing" call "Call of Cthulhu" Had no idea what it was. Not that I asked, but that is beside the point. I greatly appreciate the info. I actually feel like looking into it now. Thanks.

    Cheers.

  • Many thanks, if you can excuse my rambling style and poor editing (which I hope will improve) then I will make more.
