Of course since 83' did the soviet kids get into the B-boy scene. Even in 86' they where still never as good as american breakers kuz they only know what they seen on tv. Pluse yall know the relations usa and ussr people had with each other.
@Carmela181. The "Courier" translation is inline with the Russian version. Courier, messenger -- same thing. But, definitely not "runner" or "errand" boy :)
my name is Mike, was born 1973. As to the correct the film is about generation 85-88. the dance group were name 'LEADER" Moscow. the soviet soldier is the hero from Afganistan. It mean that were different life/ one dancing another in Afganistan
@pipelinepromotion It's still so. If you were not smart enough to enter selected university and are in good health you go to the army for 2 years (3 for the navy)
@hdug86989 This soldier obviously served in Afghanistan judging by war medals on his uniform overcoat. Afghanistan was the topic of the 80's decennary in the USSR, all Soviet mothers were worried their sons could serve there. So this scene means the soldier went through do-or-die trials and grew into manhood. And the guy who is the lead character is just going to face this stage of life.
IMO, the soldier is back from Afgan where he fought against imperialistic (i.e. USA) agents and gangs, helping Afgani nation to defend their socialism, from his point of view. Now he comes back and sees his own neighbours and former friends are fond of US culture and dance. This made his war useless, and made them kinda enemies. He had to fight "there", but dance and music came "here" and "spoiled" his brothers. He doesn't want to fight any more, so he just passes,
@Element82 absolutely right... I agree. I think same... yes, it's sad, but true. Btw I myself passed through this... and I must tell this is very sad. But true...
@hdug86989 In 1986 Soviet Army was in Afghanistan. This soldier, probably, has returned back from there, a just after the war this reality is stunning for him.
@hdug86989 listen to eldrotto, he talk and explain this sence right and open. pipelinepromotion explained only minor and obvious sence. I am the live example... sad, but true.
The main hero of this movie is a young boy, he is a symbol of moscow reckless youth. Dances, girls and rock and roll. Demobilized man is a representative of Soviet soldiers which fought in Afganistan. This scene is a very dramatic. We can see a meeting of two different characters and world outlooks.
The main hero is going to serve in the Army, demobilized man returned to his ordinary life.
@hdug86989 this soldier just came back home from the Afgan war. And who knows, mb hero of this movie should go to Afrghanistan soon, because he is 18 and this is abligatory to serv in army.
@hdug86989 it's not just soldier, his clothes show us that he returned from Afganistan. I suppose director said that fighting in Afganistan (and probably death) is waiting for Ivan...
breakdance should and will be the most expressive dance of all at the time dance was singled out to cultures and now the mix max of cultures have created somthing special well done new york streets around 1970
becuase the USSR and USA was at war... which was called the COLD WAR and each side was trying to break each other mentally so if USSR see its citizen doing western civilization things... it would make them think the whole country will start to support USA way of living making them lose the war.... even though they did
no, it was very first splash of breakdancing/skateboarding in the late 80s in USSR. "Courier" is the name of the movie. It is something like "Wild Style" for americans, you dig ? it is one of the very first movie in USSR with real breakdance footage.
@klasomentas It's not quite correct to translate this title as "Courier". It should be "An errand-boy" or "A runner" or smth like this. That's actually what the boy does to earn some money, and also have less leisure time, as his mother is tired of his permanent escapade
in 1986 it was quite legal already, but strongly disliked by elder generation
I just wanted to describe the conversation between those two teen guys. One asked his friend, what was his dream, and the other answer was to get a coat. Since the last winter he just had a jacket(it's kind of cold in a Moscow in the winter time) So he gave his coat, cause he had to go to the army anyway (he said), and asked his friend to dream something higher than a coat...
OK GUYS STOP, NOW I KNOW THE MEAN. THANKS!

SpaceINeyeS 8 months ago
there's no "political implication", the whole movie is about a new life of a new soviet generation
the soldier in the end has clearly just got back from Afghanistan
so he comes back and see that there's other life which is totally alien to him
he's still very young but at the same he's a real stranger for those laughing teens
