I been a lover of Bessie Griffin and the Gospel Pearls for a long time since I heard the album
" Gospel Soul". First time I seen her on video. Thanks very much. I dont think I`ve ever heard any lady with such an obvious God given vocal gift since Joan Baez ( different style of course ) however they both make me shiver. Bessie looks a real sweetie too. I dont know much about her life.
this reminds me of those psalms where King David is running for his life in a strange country and is really crying out to the Lord! just very heart felt asking for God to help him. thank you for uploading! this is new to me but i am going to learn it cause sometimes you need to know the right song for yourself at the right time!!
This was my grandmother.. she had no children but raised my mother in New Orleans before she moved to Los angeles!!! I just want to know how u got these clips of her? I showed my mother this and she cried til the next day... please contact me, or give me some onfo on the matter... djblade05@yahoo.com ... thanks in advance!!!
Dwayne, Thank you for posting this. I first became of Bessie Griffin in the '50's when she and the Gospel Pearls were singing in coffee houses (beatnik era). I than began to follow her in when she appeared in churches and upscale venues such as the Los Angles Musuem of Art. She will always rank up there with Clara Ward I feel very fortunate to have known both of them while they were alive.
@jddrew1000 I think this was because at first she emulated Mahalia, but by this time she had developed her own unique artistry and became a legend in her own deserving right!
I was not on the gospel scene during the era of time of the film of Bessie Griffin was made, however I can relate to her message and style of singing. I was brought up in a church where all types of gospel singing was welcomed and ministered to the hearts of men! How I Long for Those Days Again!
Bessie Griffin was an accomplished lead singer by the early 50s. Bessie was asked to sing at Mahalia Jacksons 25th chicago anniversiary which she did, was asked not long after after that to sing lead with the Caravans.

She reminds me of Mahalia Jackson! Her pain and telling a story is all in her voice.

@DonDiva4u03 Mahalia and Bessie were both born in New Orleans ten years apart, Bessie was often compared to Mahalia.

Is this version of the great Bessie Griffin available on CD? If so, what CD? What was the source of this video?
This has to be one of the great performances...
