GM waited until they declared bankruptcy to announce the sale of Hummer and Saturn and the liquidation of Pontiac. Ford didn't wait until it hit rock bottom to do so. Any FYI, Mazda isn't Ford's only source for engines. As for the economy, GM is doing a great job, considering the large numbers of layoffs and constant need for government funds (sarcasm).
In the 70s & 80s, GM should have gotten rid of the useless brands, that would have been the best time to get rid of. I think the ride quality of my dad's 92' Bronco is better than the Silverado. GM calls their rise from bankruptcy a Reinvention, I don't believe that they will be the top brand by next year.
So anyway, Ford looks to be the best brand during the recession.

chev had something similar years ago on a concept truck and decided that it was useless, and was just more things to break.
