  • so sad and so beautiful she was so honest with her interpretation of song very few singers like this except for sinatra. she told a story through her music.

  • La voz de mil matices!!!

  • when i listen to billie i feel myself calming down i breive slow and deep and then im relaxed

  • pure genius

  • You know at this point her was not anywhere near it's best. But her artistry, delivery, phrasing and emotional impact are truly amazing. A genuine and forever great.

  • In 1956 I was 10 years old, I listened to her , loved her voice, wish I could have met her

  • Billy Holiday and Vincent Van Gough were all soul; therein lies the depth of their shared beauty & pain... forever with us. *Gratefull*.

  • She is tell us a story of love, life, and deep emotion in this song. She is a master at poetic story telling and her music will last through time.

  • Brano favoloso, interpretazione magistrale. Magica Billie!!!

  • This is a great artist singing about a life, her's.No gimmicks, just the purest form of jazz. You know she lived it and left it "like a ripple on a stream."

  • gordoncamp , Thank you by post this gold !!! This is the track 5 of her penultimate studio album , "Ladin in Satin"- 1957 . In her voice was a far cry from the blithe, conert-like intrument that during the 1930s stood the jazz world on its ear, It now drew from the deepest wellsprings of emotional experience. Frames by Ray Ellis´ lush arrangements for a large esemble that included strings, harp, and vocal choir. "Lady in Satin" now wears a stunning new gown. God bless Lady Day !!! Forever!

  • Beyond sublime. . .

  • @Rabidburt

    nice thing to say

  • RIP billie, noone told a story like you..

  • Different class

  • Simply gorgeous! Billie was unfortunately very close to leaving and that shows in her strained voice -but for some reason, and Ray Elli's arrangements may have helped, she conveys 101% of the song's spirit. Thanks for posting!

  • I wish there were some video to go along with the music.

  • Lady Day, except in her last yrs. when she was destroying her life with heoin, was one of the greatest jazz singers of all time. She's right up there with Ella Fitzgerald. This is one her her great performances.

  • Gut wrenching and transcendent. This is the definitive version by far--and I've heard many versions.

  • Love this. @jjrobanus, it's not a talent show, nor "American Idol". It's the emotional

stylings of a truly great artist near the end of her life. She's not just singing, she's telling a story in her unique way. Try to recognize this.

  • Thanks @felamerkin I have been waiting for this comment for some time. And thanks for putting it so succinctly.

  • @felamerkin

Thank you for having the good taste, the intellect, and the sensitivity to recognize greatness in its varying stages. Like me, you obviously love and respect Lady Day.

  • @felamerkin I'm just starting to listen to Billie after playing, writing and listening to music for the last 30 years. The off-tune notes and the slides give me the chills. This is like finding treasure, incredible voice.

  • I listened to the Lady in Satin LP my whole childhood with my mom. I wish I knew whatever happened to it.

  • @PMagicly. it's on cd with bonus tracks and outtakes.

  • best song ever performed

  • she left us way too soon, what a pity!

  • I have always appreciated the way

    she delivered her songs.

A woman who suffered alot of pain

and sorrow unfortunately but it came

    out in her music.
