only skunk you can get in the uk is for smoking, shame, they look like better pets than cats,we got badgers here but can't keep those as pets, wierd law really as bringing up a badger from a baby would probably give it a better life than being eaten by a dog or run over which is about the only time you ever see them, i wouldn't mind a pet squirrel as well

My friend had one and to me they're like bigger fluffier ferrets except they're more personal with you. Following you around, kissing your nose, laying on your pillow, etc. Ferrets and skunks are in the same family anyway so I guess that would explain the similar behavior. They're awesome pets to have :)

@c0al Spaying skunks easily doubles their life span because of the stress they are under when they are in heat. Scent gland removal is probably not really necessary for a pet skunk, as skunks will only spray if they feel they are in a life and death situation, but it doesn't hurt them and is probably for the best since it can be done during the spay / neuter operation.

I don't really think it's a good idea to own a skunk. When owning a skunk, you immediately choose to remove it's scent gland, which isn't really something you should do because it it is a natural part of them. It's like removing something you don't accept. I'd rather not get one if I it would mean removing a body part... SAVE THE ANIMALS!!! :D

It's illegal in most states to own one. If you get one anyhow, find a vet FIRST willing to do medical care. They are extremely difficult to own, intelligent and curious. They don't eat cat or dog food, you have to cook for them. Look, and look well, before you leap, because you don't want a miserable pet, and you don't want to be a miserable owner.

We had pet skunks when we were growing up. One was 35 pounds! His name was Sargie (Sargeant Pepper) and he was a lap skunk! He also played with our Siamese cat Zinn who was toilet-trained. But the skunk used the litter box. We also had squirrels, prairie dogs, ferrets and a red-tailed hawk for a period of time. The skunks you need to be careful with though. We were told they must be bred in captivity for at least 6 generations because they can carry rabies.

I got my skunk at a shelter when it was a baby. To own one it depends on your state, my state is legal but it has to be a certain pattern on their back. And yes they have to be housebroken, I used corner training.

Umm actually no. Skunks are related to ferrets and ferrets' dietary needs are MUCH closer to that of a cat's than of a dog. A skunk and a dog couldn't be any more different. Even though their diets are similar to cats they still can't eat what cats do because it doesn't supply them with enough of the essential nutrients they need.
