And far as "substance" is concerned, subtance varies in all forms of music. Rap beats are also made up in the same fashion other music genres are produced. Keyboards, instruments and computer modules. Every genre does not have an Orchestra. So I'm not sure how you're deriving at your conclusion. One last thing, I once recently saw "The Earthman Experience". It supposedly mixes modern hip hop with other stuff including having a traditional African drum in the band. This is where the hip hop/ rap industry should go if it should go any where. Instead of sampling songs and then rapping over it the artists should be in a multi-performer band like it used to be back in the day. Either that, or learn to play an instrument. Or learn some music theory to use in digital music.

One last thing, I once recently saw "The Earthman Experience". It supposedly mixes modern hip hop with other stuff including having a traditional African drum in the band. This is where the hip hop/ rap industry should go if it should go any where. Instead of sampling songs and then rapping over it the artists should be in a multi-performer band like it used to be back in the day. Either that, or learn to play an instrument. Or learn some music theory to use in digital music.

A few rappers, like BIG and Tupac, actually rapped about meaningful things (getting out of the hood, going from rags to riches) but today most rap is just about killing people, drugs, sex, or homicide. Besides, why listen to rap when there are so many other great genres to choose from? Classic rock includes music by the Beatles, Stones, Aerosmith, ACDC, Jimi Hendrix, Santana, Bob Dylan, Led Zeppelin, the Who, ect.

There are a lot of garbage rappers, but the genre itself is not garbage. The people we see on TV that talk about 20" rims, hustling, making it rain are not the only artists in the industry. If you were to listen to Devin the Dude or Masta Ace you would see that not every artist is limited in subject matter. Not everyone has to talk about money, it's just unfortunate that most do!!! I think we're witnessing the evolution of rap, I'm starting to see more innovative artists than ever before
