I had no idea he played this role! Holy cow, Alan Cumming, Norbert Leo, Raul Esparza, John Stamos, Neil Patrick Harris, and Adam Pascal! Wow, why so many stars?
@bryceep They used a lot of famous people to get people to come to see a 45 year old play for which they've already seen the movie. The same trick was used in Chicago, Grease, and West Side Story recently. In some cases the choices were more for name recognition than singing ability: Brook Shields, Christie Brinkley, John Stamos, Neil Patrick Harris, etc.
Yeah, so, Adam is wearing a sparkly dress and makeup, and his hair is dyed black. And I STILL think he looks hot. And his voice is amazing, as always.
I saw American Repertory Theatre's Cabaret last week, which was mindblowing. It's awesome seeing all these cool people singing the songs on youtube, but this particular one might as well have been written for Amanda Palmer (the Emcee in the A.R.T. show.)
I LOVE the inclusion of this song... I don't like how they cut it from most productions and the movie until this revival. It gives MUCH more depth to the Emcee.
Also, Alan Cumming has this part DOWN. This guy sounds a little too nasally...
I do love the passion in his voice: you don't just hear the words, you can feel them and it's brilliant.
Without the intent of spamming the comments, has anybody listened to Emilie Autumn's cover? She gives it a whole new twist and the range in her voice is amazing, if you haven't already please please listen to it.
I have the book of cabaret and this number is meant like the emcee is representing sally being drawn back to the klub. And its like she is singing this to cliff
The song is meant to mean how numbed people are from all the decadence and stuff.... and how worn down and beatn they are..... its also an illustration of Sallys mental state
Personally, I think that this song is the Emcee mourning the loss of Germany, his country, to the Nazis-his desperation as he addresses the German people. The fact that he's in drag indicates that he's also mourning his own persecution
actually the more I considered it, I think that this song is supposed to be the Emcee doing a parody of Sally Bowles. I could be wrong, you could be right. whos to say?
well just so you all know, Pirelli is commonly played by a woman in drag because the part is so high. they lowered the part for Sasha Baron-Cohen (Borat)
he is SO talented. i mean, i love rent to death, but it's not a very difficult show to do, especially when you were in a rock band like adam. but to see him perform cabaret? oh god i just fainted.
next thing i know he'll do sweeney todd. and then i will absolutely die of pure joyyyy. :D
okay that sounded a little weird, but i totally dont regret it lol
Sweeney is outside his range (Adam is a tenor). He could be the Beadle or Pirelli.... oh man, now I really want to see him as Pirelli. That would be hilarious.
Yeah, but Adam can hit all the notes so who knows? He can sing in a more classical style when he wants to and Pirelli is a character role so the sky is the limit. I was only half-serious, but it *would* be quite a thing.
Speaking as an actor I once again I have to say Raul Esparza was brilliant in this role. The song is more than a contemporary sad song. It requires sublety and understanding. This version sounds like a top 40's radio version. To those people who "get it", thank you! I think the tragedy of this show on Broadway was that it kept getting big film and TV stars who just didn't understand it or have the experience to deliver the role with brilliance. A shame, really.
My background education is in the analysis of literature, inclusive of plays. From this perspective of symbolism and psychology, Adam's interpretation of the Emcee is correct and superior to Esparza's comparatively by-the-numbers rendition.
Like any piece of art or artist, it's all subjective, and there are no right or wrong opinions.
This part of the show really got me to tears when I saw it... this is where the part of making fun of someone gets ugly. It's an exaggerated way of showing us where to stop when we are making fun of someone. This is where you can really see the Emcee's raw, lifeless, reality part of him (besides the Finale, which really shows us it)
I have to say that when I clicked onto this I was expecting something reminiscent of Rent or Aida (sorry, it's kinda stuck). But Adam Pascal has very pleasantly surprised me! He CAN do something outside of pop musicals!
Has he done anything else outside the realm of Rent and Aida?
You should *really* see the Concert version of Chess with Adam (I think it's up on Google video). That was really his finest hour; it really shows what he can do with his voice. If not the whole thing, the song "Pity the Child" is on youtube and it is... words fail me.
Yes he did, with Josh Groban as Anatoly and Julia Murney as Florence. Adam is so mind-bogglingly amazing in it, I can't even tell you. He makes PtC look *effortless*.
A bootleg of the professional recording (video+audio) is up on the net.
Hell yea it shows what he can do. The nickname of that song is "pity the singer." theres a friggin' Db in it not to mention probably a C, B, A, G, anything tenor in their. It defines a high tenor song.
i'm not sure where you're getting this from, but there's not a single Db in the whole song. The highest note is an F, not exactly exclusive to high tenors...
I LOVE how he sings this song. Every time I hear it, I get goosebumps. It's so haunting I've seen a few other people sings this and Adam's is my favorite....
Late 1930's in Berlin, the rise of Nazi-ism, and the gaudy, glamorous city life. The singer is the MC at a nightclub where the female lead (a british singer/dancer) works. Her boyfriend, the protagonist, is an American author.
This is the part of the play where everything is coming apart.
it's supposed to be ironic... he's saying that he doesn't care much about love because he has other things to worry about like the roof caving in and his coat's too thin. But when you look at him, he obviously cares and is heartbroken.
I think the meaning is more literal. The emcee(/Sally, for whom the song was originally written I guess) is not capable of experiencing love due to hardships in his life, and yet feels sorrow and longing over something which is out of his reach.
I think this interpretation is the more tragic one, alike to the pain of Hamlet, who feels uninvolved in front great tragedy, yet is struck with grief over his own inability to grieve.
so I think it's without irony, he just doesn't care. (very much)
hmm, these interpretations seem to be based on just watching this clip, rather than the actual context of the show. In context the meaning is pretty clear. Sally has just decided to stay at the cabaret indefinitely rather than flee to america with cliff. The emcee, as the spokesman of the cabaret, says that she is dispensible and he doesn't actually care what she does, which is the true tragedy of the show. The lines about poverty are a metaphor for the coming war. hope that helps.
The thing no one here seems to have mentioned is the use of the EMCEE in the show. The Emcee is a metaphor for our collective unconscious and, even within the "world of the show" does not technically exist outside this context. He is a Brechtian device, for the benefit of theater historians, and his relevance throughout the show (with this song as an example) is to be outside the action of the show and looking in and commenting on the characters' predicaments.
if you listen you notice that the lyrics contradict the melody and tone. the song doesnt osund like a man who could care less. it sounds like someone who cares very much is trying to hide it. i love the irony of that.
(and by the way this is the second best emcee voice ive ever heard. I still think noone can beat joel)
