Paperback Writer/Rain was a single recorded during the Revolver album sessions--even though the 2 songs weren't put on the album itself. (Double-A side single, if you ask me!) There's some interesting stuff on "Rain" on a video here on YouTube (assuming the Team YouTube/Gestapo hasn't removed it by the time u read this) that can be found by searching:
You can hear the effects changing with the vocals...reverb...sound on sound, which at the time was looped tape like early tape echo only a very fast repeat picked up by another tape head on the same machine, which made it bigger, sort of made it ring. Fascinating to hear how the recordist worked the tracks. Cool stuff.
it should have out of fairness to Lennon, been released as was Day Tripper/Paper Back Writer released as a double A side. (as was most famously, of course, Strawberry Fields/Penny Lane)
sadly, in 1967 back when it was happening (though Rain was recorded of course in 1966) Ringo said of his drumming in the Beatles official biography by Hunter Davies, "I get all kinds of praise from other drummers about certain bits I play and I tell them it was always one of the others that told me to play it." Understandably through the fog of the years, Ringo (a fine drummer) would like to believe he wrote the "cool bits" on drums which - at least in 1967 - he states he did not.
nonsense. as the ballad of john and yoko proves just john and paul would have been a beatles. sounds 90% as good technically and 100% as good artistically. aesthetically, of course we're all so glad there were 4 of them.
Jawdropping fill after jawdropping fill. As phenomenal as the rest of the song is, the drumming is on a whole 'nuther plane. Without John, no Beatles. Without Paul, no Beatles. Without George, no Beatles. Without Ringo, no Beatles.
That is the miracle of The Beatles. Four essential parts, each alive in the same city, at the same time. Never again will such a thing happen.
They set the dimensions of the universe. We are just filling the spaces between since then.
this should have been a double a side..what the fuck were they thinking having this brilliance as a b side...they did it again in 1967 with i am the walrus the bside of hello goodbye.
derek smalls played bass on this - little known fact.

I don't want to die and go to heaven, just make me invisible and then send me back to 1963 and attend all their recording sessions.

so THERE you go! the guy hitting the high piercing note is in fact Lennon not Macca on this particular song. Amazing.

i was JUST about to write that Rain deserves the A side as 'much' as Paperback Writer. Personally I prefer rain. By some margin.
