  • Whats a good fluorescent light fixture for a 40 gallon breeder that you recommend?

  • @lbtheman12345 - I can't say I am up to the latest in lighting. I think the move to LED is a little premature but they are promising. I use a striplight that has two 55W or 65W compact fluorescent bulbs. You can use two of those striplights for high intensity requirements and those bulbs are cheap and easy to get. I like 10,000K light color but any "daylight" bulb should be OK.

  • @mishmosh2000 Where did you get your striplights?

  • @lbtheman12345 - usually ebay. They have cheap power compact bulbs too.

  • Great looking tanks. You make me want to get a CO2 system. You should consider Rasbora or maybe a Black Tetra that schools and is not hard on the shrimp. Plants are amazing.

  • This is a great looking tank. Well kept and trimmed!

  • hey dude! Im at plantedtank too, but how do you grow your round pellia (subwassertang) like that? It looks so round and nice! please replay thank you!

  • @sayurasem Hey sweet! Just start with a flat small stone and wrap it under plastic netting. It'll grow out like that.

  • @mishmosh2000 so just some round pellia on top of flat mesh? Does the inside died because no light?

  • @sayurasem Put the Pelia under the mesh. Sooner or later, as the mass expands outward, the inside will become necrotic. You can either trim it regularly, or let it enlarge until one day you need to do it all over again.

  • Did you inject Co2 in this tank?

  • What light did you have over the 58 gallon? What light do you have on current tank?

  • @SuperKillifish - yes, this tank has co2 and 4 x 55W power compact flourescent bulbs. My 58gal lo-tech has only 2 x 55W bulbs.

  • good looking tank. check mine out. Let me kno what you think

  • That is really nice! Please check out mine!

  • Very nicely done! how long did it take for the moss to cover the one stone in the foreground?

  • can you please please tell me how to take care of live plants, i currently have fake plants (look my video to see it} but i want to get live plants i think they look better and will help my tank on nitrate and ammonia. what do i need to keep live plants. please any info will be appreciate it. thank you

  • @supersanchez1991 I would start out with plants that are easy to grow, and without much light. Go to one of the aquarium plant retailers and see what they suggest for beginners. Make sure you have enough light but not too much. 2-3" of substrate is a good start. You will learn as you go but I think to start out with plant selection is the key to success.

  • I think your aquarium is very beautiful! Was just wondering why you don't add some neons and maybe some tetras? That would look really pretty!

  • @freespiritxoxoxo - I didn't think they would be OK with shrimp but looking at other videos, I guess shrimp and neons do get along. Thanks! That'll be my project for this weekend!

  • i am setting up my 40 gallon planted tank this weekend.i pretty much understand everything except for the co2 injection or c02 canister.could someone please explain to me what this means and is it a must have for plants and fish?thanks.

  • how do u make the subwassertang moss into balls?

  • @joshy39769 - get some plastic mesh (like from a bag of oranges) and tie it around a flat stone with the moss underneath the mesh. You can do this for just about all mosses.

  • @mishmosh2000 but wouldn't it hurt the plant? well after doing that just do not care and put it in to the tank?

  • @joshy39769 - the moss will be fine. As long as the mesh is big enough to let the moss grow through it, it'll be fine. You can also use string to tie it around.

  • i have a 20 gallon tank that used to look nice like yours, but over the years i stopped cleaning it, and its now like algae covered ruins, i kinda like the look though

  • thnks for the reply my man!

  • hey man wht did u use for substrate? ( sadn, cat litter) thnks in advance!

ohh and how did u plant little grass like tht? is there seed u can buy or somthing?

  • @starthi unadulterated kitty litter is just bentonite clay. I use that as my base. It is covered by sand. After this video was posted, I put down a top layer of Aquarium Plants substrate (similar to eco complete).

The "grass" is like the moss. You can get a clump of different mosses from various shops/enthusiasts.

  • @mishmosh2000 ok i made the tank with potting soil and cat litter, and hav few plants, but its really murky. did this happen to urs or... and advise?

  • @starthi I would top with 3/4" of sand or 1" of a substrate like eco-complete. the soil or the litter will probably continue to make the water cloudy for quite some time.

  • @mishmosh2000 yeah man im thinking of just buying the soil, from petsmart, do u know any place to buy it at for cheap?

  • @starthi I bought the aquariumplantsdotcom substrate which comes in a big bucket. Not too expensive considering shipping is free. It is nice and dark and is very similar in size to eco-complete....nice small pellets.

  • planted aquarium...or aquarium WITH plants ?

  • Beautiful tank. I just have a smaller tank with some Java Moss, Java Fern and Pellia. Still very new so it's nice to see what it can look like once things have had a chance to grow out a bit.

  • Your suppossed to have fish in it what's the hole point if it doest

  • @NAJUAXO

    who says?!

who says you HAVE to have fish? I think 'water gardens' (as I like to call them)

are absolutely beautiful just the way they are. Besides sometimes fish just complicate things.

  • why the hell isn't there any fish in your fish tank? DUMB

  • Nice tank.

I'm currently only working with mosses, fissedens, pelia, which are guaranteed to not look like shit, ever.

All the other plants I tried either went through dormant cycles where they looked like hell, or overgrew my tank on a weekly basis.

  • @Vlaxitov - do you trim your fissidens? It grows out and then seems to decay at the base, lifting the whole bunch off the wood. I am trying to do a fissidens wall instead.

  • I've only ever used the longer fissedens on wood. I think its called zipper moss.

As dumb as it sounds, I probably spent as much on my wood as my fish. I also have an angelic and green phantom pleco that love chewing on it.

I can't fully tell but it appears you use the same wood. How many WPG's are you pushing. I've found that fissidens need alot more lite than people claim it does. If you're getting it to grow at all, thats better than alot of people do.

  • Light* hahahaha

  • @Vlaxitov - I have 5WPG. The fissidens grows the slowest of my mosses but it still grows well. I have it in low light tanks and you are right, it doesn't grow well (if at all). The pelia grows too fast--had to take it out. Suberwassertang is perfect--not too fast and always looks great too. Thanks for your comments.

  • Yeah, Im not doing pelia atm but might again real soon. That stuff is in a way like fissidens in the sense that I found myself misinformed and frustrated with it the first time around.

My problem with it at the time was water temp. Süßwassertang is actually just a variety of pelia. Good to know its slower growing because it does look good. Thanks for the info.

  • I love this video and the plants, outstanding, but I don't think I ever saw a shrimp in this shrimp tank!

  • yeah, i feed a lot, wow they can eat algae so i don't have to kill them... thanks

  • I can't kill them because i have too many all over my tank

  • The snails are good for eating algae? or snails gonna destroyed plants? Thanks for reply mishmosh200

  • Yeah, snails eat algae and detritus. Do you feed a lot? Is that why you have so many?

  • anyone here know about how to anti-snails? my Tank had too many snails

  • Snails are usually limited by what they can eat. I wish I had more but the shrimp clean the tank like nobody's business.

  • they have tablets you can put in your aquarium but thats if you dont have any fish in their if you have fish you can use some aquarium salt, but not 100% effective. some people use fish such as puffers and clown loaches

  • use a small wide mouth glass jar, say 3oz?? put an algae wafer in the bottom then after your lights have been out for 2 hrs you'll find it full . . . that or those green pea puffers do a good job!

  • Here's my video plants /watch?v=P96SHJPU6T8

  • What's the moss around 1:43-44 when music started to play? Thank you

  • I believe that is weeping moss...very hardy and fast growing.

  • Oh, i already have Taiwan moss, I just bought roots monster for plant fertilizer from ebay and i don't know how many balls that i can press into the ground of my 40gallons? Thankyou very much mishmosh2000. I'll post my video later.

  • Hi mishmosh2000 , are you sure 100% the middle moss that's Christmas moss? because i would like to buy one. Its look nice. Thanks

  • OK, I looked at the moss pics at plantedtank and can say that the middle moss is likely Taiwan moss. The aggressive moss I am trying to get rid of is weeping moss--that stuff will stick to anything and grows fast!

  • How to post video on this youtube. i'll take the video of my tank about 2 weeks later and i have to find out how to post on this youtube.

  • Once you have the video clip on your computer, after you sign in to youtube there is a yellow "upload" button that you press. Just follow the instructions to select the file. Uploading can take a LONG time.

  • I love the middle one, your tank look clean everywhere. My tank look so ugly because i have too many algae on ground and all over the plants. I had about 60-80 guppys friend included frys in my 40gallon tank. I think many fish to make the algae easy to grow.

  • Post some video!

  • The Taiwan moss its look like the middle moss of your tank. I don't know much about the moss, they are look almost the same. I think the Taiwan moss its not the weeping moss.

  • Hi mishmosh2000, the Taiwan moss that's weeping moss, what's the name of moss that on left hand and the moss of middle one and the right hand, Could you please tell me what are they? i'll get rid of all my moss and so i'll buy the same like your moss. Your moss look very nice.

  • Left is the suberwassertang, right is the Pelia. These do not stick to much of anything and look really different from other mosses as they have broad surfaces. The middle? Maybe it's Christmas moss--not sure.

  • Hello mishmosh2000, thanks for help, I had TAIWAN Moss , Java Moss and Dwarf Baby Tears on ground and i don't know why. I have algae is living over the leafs.

  • I don't know about Taiwan moss (maybe it is what I call weeping moss?), but get rid of the Java Moss! It grows too fast and is uncontrollable!

  • Hi, how many watts of your light and how many hours to turn the light on?. I don't know why, my plants had too many moss growing over the leafs and on the ground. This video showed all plants look beautiful and clean of leafs and on ground. What's happen to my plants? I leave the light on about 8-12hours daily. anyone here know about that? Please help me. Thanks

  • I have about 5W/Gal and have the lights on 10 hours/day. I only run 1 bps of CO2 and have that 12 hours/day because my plants are non-demanding. I also only fertilize once after a water change (every 6-8 weeks). ALso, what moss do you have. Some mosses are very aggressive. I do not have Java or Weeping moss because it is too agressive and grows on anything. My pelia, suberwassertang, flame and christmas moss tend not to stick to things.

  • love the plants...i have a question though..what co2 do you use..diy or pro setup and in the other vid i saw a red sea reactor 500, how much did it cost...cause im kinda thinkin on ordering one fo those on the net and not sure if its a good diffuser...thanks

  • the red sea is only good for small tanks--maybe up to 20gal or so. I went with a CO2 reactor (external) so I could handle higher bubble rates. However, I ended up with 1 bubble per second because my plants are not demanding. I would NOT recommend DIY yeast CO2...it is a pain in the long run. Get a CO2 cylinder, a regulator, and some form of reactor.

  • i only have a 10g but with low toi medium demanding plants...and dont have the money to buy co2 cylinder yet

  • You may as well experiment with the yeast CO2 to see the plant response. It is actually very neat to see what a little CO2 can do to plants!

  • beautiful tank.. i'm thinking of getting subwassertang moss.. is it an easy plant? also you you use and additives or fertilizers? thanks for the post...

  • EASY. Just needs light and CO2. I use ferts but not often...just a few days after every water change. Pellia also easy and just as beautiful. BTW, don't know if you caught my correction, but the moss on the right of the tank is actually Pelia (subwassertang on the left of tank).

  • thanks.. i did see the correction.. the moss to the left is the one i was refering to.. thanks again..

  • Do you buy your plants at stores or online?

  • wheres ur bluegill and rockbass now

  • They are in the 58 gallon where they have a lot more vertical room to swim. I will post an update of that tank soon--they are still a little skittish from the move.
