The Colonel reminds me of my Dad. Same hair, same mustache. And also just like the Colonel and the Ludlows, we're all sons and brothers in the family. Great movie!
This was one of the most beautiful films ever made. I would add to their father's statement that the boys went off to defend an England not worth defending. England persecuted and destroyed so many nations that it deserved and deserves anything that it gets.
@baggedgloria I love the film location and wondered if the "cabin" was for real! Where is it? Is it a dude ranch for daily rental? I'd appreciate the info!
The movie is about the Ludlow family during the early to mid 1900's. The father (portrayed by Hopkins) is a former soldier who has seen the worst in war and doesn't wish to see any of his 3 sons go. They all do.
It's about love, war and family bonds. Epic, dramatic and one of the most memorable movies in the past 30 or so years in my opinion.
It won't change your life, but it's one of the better films from Hollywood.
"All wariors hope a good death will find them, Tristan went looking for his." This movie literally made me water up, especially the part when Tristan comes back home after his "world tour"..lol...and see's his dad in bad shape after having a stroke, and his dad write down "Am happy" (cause he can't talk)...damn i just got a jolt while typing this, The father - son scenes always get to me
True ! They did not put that sceene in the movie , it was to explicit! After he had done her doggy style she forgot to close the window. The old man got sick over nigh because of the breeze and some nerves and shit were affected!
Aidan Quinn has an autistic daughter. You'll notice in this movie, as well as in his other movies, that Quinn has a drawl sometimes, a slowness to his speech, which makes me think that autism is genetic.
oops... why does it not work? I wanted to reply... Never mind, I can say it again in whole sentence: "if I had to choose between these three sons... I would choose the father ;)"
I'm sorry, it seems that I had some trobles with replaying at the first time because it looked like new comment firstly. But when I opened this page later, everything was put where it should be. Sometimes, the computers do what they want, don't they :D?
It is a film that takes me too a place thatonly I am prepared too travel on my own, one of my favourite films a film that few understand, a film that my partner doesnt quite understand, a film that should be played everyday, a film if the truth be known is played every other year if not that, not everyone understands loss.
This movie tears me apart every single time. This scene is SO strong, and Mr. Hopkins is a living legend indeed. His roles as a "Father" is just beyond what I can possible express. In Meet Joe Black ..In shadowlands...I'm speecless

This movie means so much to me. We are also 3 brothers, and I totally relate to the father thing, even now when I'm 30.
I love this movie so much, and James Horner's score is one of the finest ever.
Anthony Hopkins is just more than words can describe.

Yes, the score is so powerful, mesmerizing and epic. I own hundreds of sound scores, and this score seems to still be the winner in my opinion.
Absolutely gorgeous.
James Horner has composed one of the finest scores for the movie.
