  • its a nice change from all the awful music now that all sonds the same.

  • Finally, above all the unoriginal crap that we hear now more than ever from all the stupid artists out there, I hear this gorgeous song form my favorite band. I just hear the music, take a breath, and feel new life come to me every time I hear it.

  • these lyrics are absolutely beautiful. this is such an underrated song and U2 began to realize it when they played it on the tour

  • you're gravity searching for the ground

you're silence searching for a sound

damn thats gotta be one of the best lyrics ever....

  • this is. there are no words...

  • Only just learned what the line 'you wanted violins, you got Nero' means ... what a great lyric! Love this song.

  • @usernamepwc what does it mean? lol

  • @theempire00 From what I've heard, Nero played the violin whilst he watched the city of Rome burned down.

  • @usernamepwc aah I see, thanks!

  • this song makes me feel so good, elevated and elated, it takes me to a higher ground.............. :))))))

  • I can hear you to talk

    Fear nothing!!!

    Love will come again

    I gone again,

    Love has come again...

    I gone again

    and again

  • is it a coincidence that this song has 360 likes?! but wow i'm so in love with this song..... when ever i get into a pit, i discover a U2 song that pulls me out of it

  • splendida!!! u2 siete la mia vitaaaaa!!!

  • @ale201190 LA NOSTRAAAAAAA!!!! W GLI U2!!!!

  • very powerful

  • YES, THEY'RE BACK!!!! songs like this make up for the mediocre NLOTH.

  • @mmkaviator God whats wrong with No line on the horizon? Everybody complained about 'all that you can't leave behind' album and 'No line on the horizon' being to mainstream pop rock. So they try something inventive and pretty original and still people complain! They can't really win can they. Well they win with me :)

  • @Crazycupmuffin it reminds me of Pop, people said this to much over the top, but now Pop is as fresh as in March 1997 when it was released, i agree with aspect of invention, ,each album from boy to no line have been a continue experimentation, for instance red light on war or elvis presley in america on Unforgetable fire, and many more, say that u2 grown in to a mainstream format is wrong, and proof of not knowing the history.U2 is a restless band always seeking new grounds to make music...

  • @EnjoyTheSurface agreed. Oh and above i said people complained about 'all that you can't leave behind' and i meant to say 'how to dismantle an atomic bomb' but i said 'no line on the horizon' lol cos that album is'nt poppy at all :)

  • @mmkaviator Well, really all they're albums/songs are great in that they're unique. They've got to be the most versatile band ever. I'm going to see them July 11th 2011, at the Rogers Centre in Toronto.

  • chilling

  • Love is the end, history

    The enemy of misery

    Love is justice, charity

    Love brings with it clarity.

    Cool

  • Great song but for sure not their best, love the new live version tough...

  • PART 2 of my rant... They could have been strong foundations for something much better). It sounds like they were trying to mash Achtung Baby-inspired moments with Beautiful Day... just doesn't work. Bono probably doesn't have the same amount of time to mull over his words due to all his public awareness causes, so I guess that's a reasonable excuse but seriously... I think the most exciting thing about the song is the galloping bass line, which isn't saying much. Does nobody agree with my thou

  • Firstly, I am a U2 tragic, trust me. I have a ridiculous amount of useless U2 paraphernalia gathered up over the years, and defend these guys at parties whenever someone claims how shit they are etc... but I am amazed at the praise being heaped upon this song in the comments here. I think it is the sound of them TOTALLY PHONING IT IN. Especially Bono. His lyrics sound mix-matched, overwrought & under-thought ("You wanted violins & you got Nero" & "Silence searching for a sound" being exceptions

  • @Eyeman25 I sort of agree> could be a classic if bono made had made more of an effort

  • B-sides? Are you kidding, Bono? This is one of the best U2 songs full of passion, joy, desire, disappointment, hope,..... you name it! I feel so alive when I hear it. Please release this song with the dignity that it deserves! I know you would love to perform this one live, so do it ffor us, your fans! :-) Thanx in advance!:-)

  • check out my version on my channel, cheers

  • what a song

  • I was in sevilha concert and the two concerts in coimbra, it is just fantastic!!!!! i loved every second of it.i can't pick one song because i love them all too much.i have seen them just 10 times and i am thinking when it will be the next time.hope soon!!! U2 The best band on earth.

  • great song they play this song in coimbra live concert it´s magnificent i adore this song

  • Absolutely superb. Best band ever. Classic U2. Unforgettable fire like - bad/indian summer sky.

  • Absolutely superb. Best band ever. Classic U2. Unforgettable fire like - bad/indian summer sky

  • just wonderfull video

  • Unbelievable track! I find it the most extraordinary thing that U2 have not yet released it. It is "just" a demo at the moment, and never played live. It was left off the final mastering schedule for HTDAAB and never made it to 'album quality'. It's their best track since Beautiful Day, and one of the best non-catchy tunes they've ever written...and yet it still sits in the vault of the unreleased. Rumors abound that it will be on their next album due out mid 2011. I fkn hope so!!

  • Well done!

  • GOSH? To think this is a b-side...Most bands would kill to have this on their albums for sure...Praise the lord for U2..

  • Please lads? Play this version live it's awesome.

  • This is A+ material for U2. Their best perhaps since "Bad".

Too bad this new live version has been butchered down to shell of this great, unreleased version...

  • @bkwardQ True the odd few songs don't sound as good LIVE

  • The pre chorus is pretty good, too bad they left it out. Hopefully they're still in the 'lets see what works' stage for the song ;)

  • the chorus is quality, i think its the crash cymbal which makes it, but larry dosnt play it the same live,...

  • way better than the live version they played....they cut out some of the best parts

  • they played this live for the first time in Zurich!

  • @TheJake0705 Yeah ! And I was there :) It was an amazing moment !!!

  • @TheJake0705

    I was there too :-)

  • You wanted violins and you got Nero.......

WE ALL want "Mercy". PLEASE! Release this gem.

  • This is fantastic

  • I see they've been rehearsing the song before concerts recently and are changing it a bit. It's a shame, this version is perfect as is. I'm sure they'll ruin it to make it fit in with the rest of the crap they've been churning out lately.

  • @thepimppiper Crap? Magnificent, Moment of Surrender, No LIne on the Horizon, White as Snow, Breathe, Vertigo, SYCMOYO, City of Blinding lights, Original of the Species, Beautiful Day, Walk On, Kite, In a Little While, and When I Look at the World? Ya thats crap, you fucking fag.

  • @drvertigo Um... yeah, aside from the songs from All That You Can't Leave Behind (their last good album), you've just listed a bunch of crap. And thanks, that was the only time I've been called a "fucking fag" for NOT liking U2.

  • This song is just amazing. This type of song is what I used to love about U2. The only reasonable explanation I can see for them not releasing it is if they didn't feel either of the last two albums were worthy of it. Because this is better than anything they've done in ten years. Fuck, this may better then anything they've done since Zooropa.

  • I maybe went to the wrong concert. They rehearsed it in Tukey..... Let's see if they will play it live.......

  • This half finished song is hundred times better than the garbage they are releasing these days. I mean Get ON Your Boots is such garbage but that is the single these fools release on their album?

  • U2!!! PLEASE put this on your next CD!!! It is AWESOME and I have been listening to different versions for way too long!! You mentioned it in the line notes two cds ago...so stop teasing and PUT THIS AWESOME SONG OUT!

  • @ClareLorraine1 they will

  • I love this song.

  • was talking to the boys management last week in dublin .....this song will never be released as a single ever . . .as with all the songs down the side if you look to the right now so forget about about it

  • It could use a bit more work, mainly on some of the singing, no offense Bono you're a little rough on this cut, and some of the lyrics are still a little funky. Like right at the beggining, "I was drinking some wine, and it turned to blood." as far as first lines go it;s kind of odd, I know the meaning but it always seems wrong.

  • I have read on a couple of different sites that Mercy will indeed make it onto their new CD by the end of the year! I love this song so much that I may have to crowd it up there near my top 3 U2 songs of all time. F ** k n brilliant! What will be even better is the possibilty of it being played live on their next leg of tour! :)

  • ♥ je l'adore cette chanson

  • Wow, listen to that drumming near the end. I've always thought Larry was a great Drummer, but not amazing. I think I was wrong.

  • hey u2 management? get this out there official...it's brill......

  • This song may be released in U2's next album.

  • @Rossi29901 I think it's saying 'love hears when I lie'

  • I'm not english... love it's when i lie or love heals when I lie?

  • awsome song and video can you please tell me what program you used for this video

  • Top Notch from the Giants!

  • Stellar song by THE greatest Rock band ever, 4 decades in and they are still writing amazing music which, when played live, turns into just something no other band has done and thats making 80,000 people feel they are part of the songs being played and there is such emotion, from tears to laughter to goosebumps to salvation, Thank you lads you have made my horrid life so much easier to face, every time i hear a U2 song the sun always starts to shine!

  • the greatest music of all time... for all time...

  • @isaymakulit well put.

  • yikes, I think that would have been too overwhelming to be at that concert and see the 9/11 thing, makes my heart ache to see it now.

  • Hello fellow U2 fans. This is sure one powerful song lyricly and instrumentaly. The two elements of this song that are so strong are Bono whaling away singing his heart out and the Edges signature high frequencey gituar rifts. Adam of course with that stong base-line and the steady rolling thunderous drumming of Larry, what great chemistry. Thankyou God for assembling such a great band

    U2 Forever... Love you guys!!..Love this song!!...Love you God,family & friends all U2 fans!! oxoxoxo :)

  • THIS HAS TO BE RLEASED.

  • this is one of u2 bests song ever .FACT.

  • @eltonhef yes, it's true.

  • What a song... this should be released

  • Hmm im not sure about that according to the band its going to be on it, I guess we will have to wait until the release date, I also heard its coming out in Ireland first ha ha delighted

  • It's from HTDAAB sessions....

  • this song is not on songs of ascent...

i'm not sure but this song is from atyclb sessions or htdaab sessions

  • Hey guys its official this song is going to be on the new album named "Songs of Ascent" expected to be released in June 2010 according to the Irish Indapendant

  • I'm afraid it isn't...

It's a possibility, but still uncertain (as your article is the same i've read)

  • This is U2 Best song for a while, it better be on songs of Ascent,if its not there making a big mistake

  • Everybody are crying about U2 why the dont make music like boy, war , joshua tree, achtung baby... come on grow up like they did you can t be in the same era all the time.. and my opinion they are the same big band if they are not bigger than they were 25 , 21, 23 years ago just my opinnion ... btw name one band that they stay the same trough the years, that meant for those who are still alive :)

  • what a song !!! why wasnt this on nloth baffling?????????

  • i like this song. It's cool that it is going to the new album Songs of Ascent. i also like this new movie song called Winter.

  • Fantastic song.Really one of the best I've ever heard from U2.Should have been the last track on HTDAAB instead of Fast Cars.Could see this live right after or before WTSHNN.

  • The greatest song ever.

  • great,beautiful words :)

  • Bono seems to be himself more on this track not trying to hard

  • Is there any way of getting hold of this song?

  • just google a youtube video to mp3 converter

  • Meh... if it's not released, then someone needs to cover it.

  • As a side note, honestly I can see why U2 might not think this song is ready yet. Right now it's still very very good, but if they think it can be better, than it's good they wait.

But if it's never released, then it'll suck.

  • I get angrier every time i listen to this tune. Its amazing and they havent used it. Its a travesty that people wont get to hear this song.

Songs of Ascent is the last chance, although Im not hopeful.

  • "We haven't played this in a while, but we first played it here in Paris. It was a long time ago...Larry was just a boy..this is The Unforgettable Fire".

  • Great song! I love it!

  • Jak mogę to ściągnąć? Proszę o wskazówki B-)

  • just put us out of our misery and get this on songs of ascent.

  • BEST!!!!!

  • Brilliant. Can't believe it wasn't put on HTDAAB.

The bit at 2:34 is really similar to a part in the song "Smile". Smile was also recorded for HTDAAB but it didn't end up on the album.

  • I can't believe they didn't put this song on either Bomb or No Line, it's fucking ridiculous. I think U2 fans need to raid their next recording session and beat some sense into their heads.

  • this is a u2 epic

  • I firmly believe not including this song on HTDAAB is one of the most perplexing choices U2 have ever made.

  • Where would you have put it in the track listing?

  • Honestly, I think it would have been a great closing track or second to last track. In my alternate playlist for the album I have it in the last place, and think it sounds wonderful there. They tried to have an epic, climactic sounding closer with Yahweh, but this achieves that effect much better, and it's just a better song, IMO.

  • you have put togater some-thing else!

  • this song is absolutely magnificent.

  • This is one of the best songs ever, why are U2 letting this one lie? What are they playing at?

Its got EPIC written all over it!!

  • It's been heavily speculated that Mullen killed it as the last song to be added to HTDAAB. The thought was that it would make the album too long. BFD. I can think of at leat five songs on HTDAAB that "Mercy" outshines.

That decision reflects poorly on the band's decision making. Even worse, it was discarded for NLOTH. And by current sales to date, that album could certainly use a powerhouse song like "Mercy"...

  • Thanks for your reply. I think their are enough powerhouse songs on HTDAAB to make it a 'complete' album.

However i think NLOTH is a bit light on big songs and I think this would of been well suited to add more weight to the album.

  • But in NLOTH it would have been so out of place IMHO!

Not a bad song and surely better than many HTDAAB ones, but you can feel it at once that it comes from those sessions, so...

  • If that is true then Mullen needs a cockpunch.

  • They have SO MANY songs that are AMAZING...if they only officially released them they could start incorporating them into their sets in concert - they'd be as HUGE as anything else they've done.

  • One word : Great!

  • Meh - I think this song is over rated - a b-side at best as recorded here anway. It has some good moments but I think it's highly predictable and way too close to Bad. It was more of a pointer to the stuff that ended up on NLOTH.

  • why Bad? this song reminds you Bad? really?

It's the first time I hear this song, but I like it. Very good stuff!

  • this song will never be on a u2 album. sadly.

  • its supposed to be on the next one.....songs of ascent

  • Winter is good, but there's about 5 or 6 songs on NLOTH that are better than it. This song should have been finished off and released on HTDAAB. It's got to see the light of day at some point, if not it'll be a real missed opportunity. This could've been the successor to Streets.

  • really beyond me how this song has gone unheard by so many. why did they leave it out its beyond me. i can only imagine they wanted to treat real fans and not the ones who buy the greatet hits albums and claim to be big fans. please please please be on songs of ascent.

  • Great song!!!

  • It seems for the last 2 or 3 albums, U2 has developed a nasty habit of leaving the best songs off the album. There is not a single song on HTDAAB as good as mercy and there is not a single song on NLOTH as good as Winter. I just dont understand it.

  • where did you hear Winter?

  • Yea, where did you hear Winter? I've only heard about it but never heard it. I thought they just changed the name and it became a song on NLOTH. If it's a totally different song, where could I find it?

  • Actually, I just remembered that Winter is on the video 'Linear' I totally forgot about it, I'm gonna have to go back and watch it again.

  • which song is this video from? and where?

    plss can some1 tell me??

  • its from HTDAAB session. if u want to this song u must buy or download Unreleased and RareCD

  • Where do you get unreleased and rare?

  • i downloadet it=)

  • 0:00 I Still Haven't Found What Im Looking For Live From Milan

0:40 MLK + Where The Streets Have No Name (2002 Super Bowl Live)

0:54 City Of Blinding Lights (DVD)

1:10 miracle drug live from chicago

1:25 the fly live from chicago

  • lol great calls on where the clips took place

  • the video is a mixture of 1. the chicago show on the Vertigo tour 2. U2's half time performance at the 2002 american superbowl, 3. the video to 'the saints are coming' with green day and 4. the video to 'one' with mary j. blige 5 U2 playing under the brooklyn bridge in november 2004 6. the vertigo tour in milan all put to a rare track called Merccy

  • It was originally supposed to be on "Atomic Bomb", then

'Unreleased and Rare', then "No Line". It's allegedly going to be included on their next album, which is expected to come out next year.

  • this song is awesome. should have been on an album.

  • imagine this: cutting a man and a woman and crumbs from your table from bomb, and having fast cars in every country not just japan, and also adding mercy.

  • seriously this song should have been released on How to dismantle an atomic bomb.I hope it comes out in December if they come out with songs of ascents

  • I think it woudl fit better on NLOTH. Get rid of Unknown Caller and throw mercy in after Stand Up Comedy. Woudl be perfect.

  • Damn I like it !

  • has anyone noticed the bass sounds like with or with out you and a little bit of where the streets have no name. well for me it does.

  • There's forever gonna be people saying that previous work is the better work. Like when HTDAAB was first released I remember some people being not so keen. Now I see a lot that say that HTDAAB is great and NLOTH doesn't live up to it. But, I can tell you now that there'll be people talking about NLOTH in a few years time saying how amazing it was. I feel it's always going to be this way.

    Love NLOTH

    Love this song.

Hope it makes it on the next album :D

  • i completly agreee with your opinion. and i am waiting for a next album. U2 always do a good job so i m sure the next one will be as amazing as everything until now.

  • Great song...as are ALL the songs on No Line...get a grip people, like all their releases you need to appreciate them for what they are...awesome!

  • fuck yeah

  • Yeah, this song has really grown on me. I think it's better than all of the songs on No Line On The Horizon. I hope they release this soon, I'd like to see it out there.

  • They won't play this live, they will play some piece of crap song like Breathe.

These 4 fools never release the good songs just the crap like "get Your Boots On"

  • your a flaming fucking muttin bird

  • I bet you wouldn't dare say that to my face because you would know you are the flaming wimp then

  • its get on your boots not get your boots on. asshole.

  • I think boots works cause it doesnt fit in at all with the record. When it came out I panicked but like Bono said "all U2 fans panick when the new record comes out."

I always have panicked but I love every record.

  • is sooooo amazing this song!!!! love it! hope it comes in the next album of "Song of Ascient" Please put in the CD such a beutiful song!! Thanks U2 for the exellent music u have. U2 are the Best!!!

  • Why would they put it on another album when it already exists? This is the song, I doubt they are going to work on it anymore. Notice that the music of the chorus is very similar to the song Kite, so they picked that over this one. The most you can hope for is that they decide to play it live which I've read the Edge really wants to do.

  • This is such a "Magnificent" song! I hope to God it's on the Songs of Ascent album.

  • How do I import this to my I pod! HELP!

  • Let me know if you have figures this out. I want it on my ipod too.

    Thanks.

  • This is suppose to be on their next album, out later this year. I love this song!!

  • Really? Where'd you hear that?

  • not putting this on an album will go down as u2's biggest mistake. after the mullet of course.

  • You have completed have the equation, actually. Not adding "Mercy" to NLOTH was a one enormous mistake. The nail in the coffin was releasing "Boots" as the lead single...

  • yeah it should have been 'magnificent'

  • Not a huge fan, yet, of "Magnificent", but it is a number of times more tolerable than "Boots". I would have taken the route of kicking off the campaign with either "Breathe" or "No Line...".

Regardless, I hope "Mercy" doesn't get lost in the shuffle like some really good

U2 songs that never make the cut of an album. I'm just shake my head in disbelief that "Mercy" couldn't got a spot on either "NLOTH" or "HTDAAB"...stunning...

  • yeah pretty poor choice of songs lately. go find "winter" which is from the horizon sessions. great song

  • excellent tune! sounds like something on achtung baby

  • Comment removed

  • No, the worst was "All because of you", but it has a brilliant original version, so truly worst was "Crumbs from your table".
