  • I am intrigued by this. It's most likely a 5th Bombardment Wing B-17 like of the 2,97,99,301,463 or 483rd bombardment group.Do you happen to know the tail number so we could find out which bombardment group this B-17 belonged to?

My dad was a Pilot in the 463rd BG.

  • @m9078jk3 :

This bomber belonged to the 340th squadron, 97th bomb group, and it's serial no was 44-6630 - the bomber was brand new, and it's numbers were still not painted on - it was damaged over Maribor (now days Slovenia) and belly landed near island Vis on 6th of November 1944... The crew escaped unharmed except for copilot who was killed by shrapnel...

  • @urkethepro Thanks for the detailed information too bad the 97th BG Association doesn't have a website

  • Nice .I like it ,must be exciting to see peace of history intact from the day it sinked into the water. .I live in Croatia in Rijeka so maybe i will!!

  • Does the bomber have guns on it?

  • @petric : only the side ones are missing - all turrets are in place, and twin Browning machine guns are there on them... Come and see for Yourself... ;)
