I still wanna know why he stopped using this tuning system if he was so into it. You don't see any of his guitars he plays these days with crooked frets. I think it would be cool if a company like Ibanez would license this for their instruments so you COULD get a brand new guitar with the TT system. I know I'd buy one.
that guitar with the electric guitar and acoustic guitar as one has actually been done before, you can see some portions of the 'estranged' music video where Slash uses one like this....i think its bizarre no one ever mentions this ever when watching the video but its true (You can see it clearly at 3:20 in the video)
The Protestant Lute is far greater than the Jesuit Counter-Reformation guitar from Spain. The Lute has up to 26 strings but just a poultry 6-7 like guitars.
i think that bent frets have absolutely nothing to do with the sustain of the single notes.. Chords that are more in tune sustain longer, but not single notes..
@JediGuitarMaster429 good luck on getting it done...the wait time is super long let alone the process hella expensive...you basically have a better chance of getting a Ken Lawerance explorer before you get your frets tempermented.
@tefolase Most of the chords were awkward due to inversions. I'll spell them out.
Between 2:03 and 2:08, the first 'chord' was a C power chord, the second was notes D and E played together, the third was C flat 5 which is known as a tritone (the most dissonant sound in music). Fourth was a D major chord, fifth was a C major chord in 2nd inversion, sixth was D major, seventh was G major in first inversion, and the last one was an E sus 4.
There is something I don't understand about the fret system though. Because the frets are not straight but "crooked". It seems to me that when you bend a note it would go horribly out of tune. How do you make a smooth bend on a crooked fret?I mean obviously there is something I'm missing here because if Vai is using it, it must work.
@Guitareben yeah but with the bent fret there wont be a smooth transition between bent notes because the string will move against all the bent spots in the fret
@thelordofdarkcheese Sort of. That would only be TINY, and I usually use my ears for bending, so i would adjust my bend speed appropriately (unless I was doing it fast, where it wouldn't matter). Anyway there are videos of him playing it, like in the Jemini distortion video, and it is fine.
@Guitareben How would you possibly bend a note with your ears? It seems to make the most sense to use your fingers when bending (since they're already on the guitar's fingerboard). It's gotta hurt pressing your ear up against the strings, they probably get calluses, huh? Anyways, upload a video, that sounds like a neat trick! Thanks.
@bassman7530 well yeah there's obviously potentially a problem with note bends. because if you bend, say, the g on the g string, while you bend it to reach an a, the vibrating part of the string will suddenly become slighly longer and your note will go a bit lower, ruining the bend. *maybe*. Until we see a video with a clean slow bend we can't know how it sounds.
if you press down on the frets harder, the cord your playing goes outta tune to, like if you play a standard A chord on the 2nd fret, if push down on the strings harder, the ntes go sharp and it is fucking horrific how bad it gets
steve has a good sense of humor..love this guy..genius guitar player...sounds bizzare most of his tunes...but it defines his skill in a creative way...
i never really knew too much about this guy but from what i can gather hes a prick and hes full of shit? and how come he couldn't plug in that guitar?
that's silly. for somebody as rich as he, you think he could afford a guitar that stays in tune. i make under 10 grand a year and my guitar has stayed in tune for 5 months. Grover heads are the key! all that fret business is crap
i really like that acoustic/electric and electric setup... if he doesnt use that i'd buy that.... especialy since i switch between the two like no other
Steve made all that up, he actually can play any guitar and every chord on it would be in tune LOL, he just needed an excuse so that they don't figure out he's an alien
I think you can get a JEM7v neck with the bendy frets (called True Temperament, btw) for like 440 Euros. Which is usually around $660. so its pretty expensive, but honestly i thought it would be more than that.
Thats just for a jem neck, im pretty sure that if you tweak the wood options and finish options it can be cheaper
double neck acoustic electric was not done by slash first. it was douglas blair(w.a.s.p. guitarist) who did it first with his own line of blair guitars.

He is not. He refers to his acustic part of the guitar that is NOT solid body as the one Slash use to use on stage. Acustic guitars have a sound holes.

it has to do with the vibration that is carried from having the perfect tone, it's a part of the reason why the chromatic scale was made the way it was. it surfs its own vibration. :D *guesstimate*
equal temperament is convenient for playing in every key, not for resonance. In fact, a lot of it's intervals are not just. I think the sustain of the guitar in this video is all good equipment, not the frets. My opinion.
oh one more thing. The open strings are tuned just the same than in a normal guitar so if the freted note he plays is sustained from sympathetic resonance of the other strings, why we don't hear the other strings vibrate? they're not even muted.
Do a google search on the overtone series. Many people know what this is and have explained it very well. Then watch the youtube video "how not to tune your guitar". It's a three parter that explains very well why guitars are never in tune.
The amazing thing is not the bended frets but how we actually get around this problem. We actually get used to slightly bending and pressing generally to make the chords come out in tune. You know what i mean?
we can but just to be able to control that will be very difficult. i'm sure the guys who made the bent frets thought of that when they made this brilliant neck
That's brilliant. Moving the frets minute distance to fix overtone dissonance. I hope he plays it sometime soon, can't wait to hear what it sounds like.
Hmm,... I am wondering what difference does it make to bending and other techniques on the guitar. Interesting... I have read Yamaha tried this a long time ago, and several other guitar makers, but never saw it in action this way.
Double-necked guitar both at drop C! All About Eve with an electric guitar solo? I think so!

I defiantly agree with you. I find my self doing it naturally each and every time i pick up the guitar. nice observation.
