Why a lot? Because the United Methodist, Lutheran, Anglican/Episcopal, some Presbyterian, Independent Catholics, Eastern Orthodox in its various national branches and worldwide missions, and of course the Roman Catholic church all adhere to such statements of belief and the faith it professes.

The verses in Luke's Gospel do not count as a reason to pray to and "venerate" Mary, for it was the angel telling her of her role as the mother of Christ. Yes, it says "blessed are you among women", but where in that is there anything even remotely instructing you to pray to her for her intercession, to build shrines to her or pray to her with the use of a rosary? Nowhere. I don't think a rosary in and of itself is bad, but it should be used as a spiritual tool for praying to God Alone.

Yes, I have looked into the reasoning behind it. I have looked at scriptural references to which popey claims doctrines like purgatory, Mary's assumption, Mary as Co-Mediatrix, etc. are totally true. But said verses in Scripture can be a matter of interpretation as often times the verses used are not clear (like the one in 1 Cor. used to back up Purgatory) and could mean something totally different in reality.

Furthermore, you can't truly rely upon numbers alone, fatkomishgrenes; matter of fact, there probably aren't 1.2 billion Roman Catholics in the world anyway. Why? Because many of them have become atheists, they have become agnostic, they have become Protestant, they have become Anglican, or maybe something else. The numbers are grossly inflated more than likely, and represent anyone who was ever baptized Roman Catholic, not necessarily the actually believing and/or practicing ones.

MsLucky, Christ didn't found the ROMAN Catholic church as you are implying, but rather the Universal (or catholic, which means universal) Christian Church starting in 1st Century Palestine, and then it spread to the rest of the Mediterranean world, whereupon it eventually spread to the rest of Europe over the next few centuries. The universal church did have the sacraments of baptism and communion, and also bishops, presbyters/elders/priests, and deacons.....

I am neither a catholic nor an evangelical but I studied the bible just before I listened to this man's message. He is telling the truth. I invite you to study more deeply into the word of God especially the book of Revelation because there you will find the revelation of Jesus Christ. The catholic church at Synod of Hippo (393) and other council declared what scripture are true in a time when hundreds of scriptures circulated. The Catholic Church was also the first to declare the Bible as inspired by God. So, either you believe the Holy Spirit works through the Catholic Church in matter of truth, or you cant know the canon of the christian Bible is true!

Are you serious? Almost every Christian faith is rooted in the Roman Catholic Church. Different forms of Christianity began when Martin Luther nailed the Diet of Worms on the door of the church and was excommunicated for doing so. From then on different sects of Christianity began to emerge. Not only did different forms emerge of the faith, but different ways of interpreting the bible. Read a history book!
