Both martial arts have the same origins meaning the different martial art styles of chinese and japanese families.The crucial difference between them is that kung fu is a more complete martial art due to the fact that it has been around for longer and also it was more successful in assimilating those styles.Karate is not as complete.There is a martial art(which was named mistakenly traditional karate) which is based in these(most of them) martial art styles.

No way! Okinawa (Southern island of japan) people learned Chinese martial arts and developed their own skills into Karate. Thus it came from China, not vise versa. This video says at the end he is a monk in a shaolin temple. Kanfu is one style of Shaolin. Can not call it Karate.

In okinawa (where karate was created by influence of chinese martial monks) the actual Okinawan Karate was known as "chinese hand" in his begginings. After years they developed his own style (and diferent schools as uechi ryu, shito ryu...) creating the original karate, Okinawan Karate
