Wow, you people whine a lot. Raccoons are huge pests. They can and sometimes do attack people. They also can and sometimes to carry rabies. Why risk getting near one?
Especially bad if you have kids or pets running around.
If I had one going through the trash at my home, and it got stuck, I'd beat it to death with a shovel.

well I do hope for your sake that if you ever need help (for example, you fall through ice, get in a car accident and the car's burning, etc.) someone doesn't just sit there and poke at you and let you slowly suffer without at least trying to help. So what if it MIGHT scratch you, you could have thrown on some gloves. I hope that you can sleep at night knowing that the poor creature probably slowly suffocated to death.

I have removed two plastic peanut butter jars from Raccoons this year. They will come to you for help. DO NOT CORNER THEM. See below. They can not bite you with a jar on their head!!!
Stand still and call them like a dog and they will come to you if they have decided it is the only way out. Reach out, grab the jar and pull upward, the racoon may be in the air for a moment and their weight will disengage them from the jar. I have never had one claw me or try to bite me afterwards but be sure you have enough space to back away.

We had long pants and hoodies on and she would run and grab the jar and pull it off and if it looked like it was really going to hurt her I would smack it with a fishing pole..not really hard just so it would get distracted away from her
