Desmond had a flash-forward in his mind that showed Charlie dying from drowning and that Claire and her baby(Charlie's love) got rescued. So if Charlie didn't die that way the future would have changed and they probably wouldn't have gotten rescued. That's why it's so sad. He sacrificed himself.

Well I know for Claire to leave he had to die, and like some people say he could have swam through the hole (although impossible due to the pressure of the water coming through the hole and by the time he waited for the water to stabilize, he wouldn't have made it all the way to the top) but, he could have just ran out of the room, not even lock it, I mean, it would have taken so much time for the main room to fill up. They killed off a great character in a bad way imo.

Desmond told Charlie that the only way Claire and Aaron could get off the island safely was if he pulled the switch and drowned. Charlie loved Claire and would take his life to save her. He thought if he didn't drown, nobody would be rescued. The only reason Desmond saw Charlie drowning in his vision was because in the future, he would tell it to Charlie, making him want to drown to save Claire and Aaron.

I know its TV but its not realistic. In physics the water would stop entering the room once it reached the level of the window. It's an air tight chamber so the air wouldn't be able to escape out and would get pushed to the ceiling. In this scene the air was pretty much destroyed and matter/space can't get destroyed.

Rrrrgghhh... This scene always irritates me! His death feels so cheap. Why didn't he just go out on the OTHER side of the door and close the door? You know the side where he actually wouldn't DIE? And even if the door couldn't be locked, him and Desmond would still have plenty of time to escape from the underwater station.

This shows that he doesn't die because he wants Desmonds flashes to be true. He does it because he doesn't want Desmond to die by the water. Only problem is that him and Desmond would have more than enough time to escape together.

@AlexJaySea Season 5 had time travel. One of the two cliffhangers of the end of that Season was whether or not they could make it so the plane never crashed by destrying the island in the past. In Season 6 we see a realm where the plane doesn't crash. It's not an alternate-time line though, it's a place where the ones who can "let go" of issues they never got over in life get to "move on" with their friends. Charlie's in this realm. The island story of the 5 seasons and Season 6 was all real.

Desmond told Charlie he had seen that he was going to die in The Looking Glass, and said he would go, but Charlie knocked him out and went himself. When the grenade came, he just thought of saving Desmond and telling him about Penny, he already knew he'd die somehow and soon. They couldn't prevent ir forever. He had made his peace with that.

Lost is still one of my favorite shows though, I'm not one of those people who lets a minor continuity error/blooper or something like "They never explained *insert irrelevant detail*!!!" kill my enjoyment of these characters' journeys.

I'm fine with Charlie dying here, but HOW he died breaks the laws of physics. That room (and the whole underwater station) is air tight, i.e. air cannot escape so water can't flow in and replace where air used to be. The water would have only filled up to the top of the window because once it does the air at the top has nowhere to go. Haven't the Lost writers held a cup upside-down and pushed it into water before? This bothers me every time and it diminishes my emotional Lost experience.

@smashbros4ever What I think happened was that Desmod told Charlie that unless he died, Claire and Aaron wouldn't have been rescued, so instead of swimming to the top of the room for air, he decided to stop running from death and die for the sake of the other islanders. Just my opinion of what happened :)

What I loved about this show was that every character, no matter how insignificant, had a purpose on the island. Each person contributed to the outcome, some more than others.
