Hmm, this is funny to read all these comments bashing on her.. I'm not justifying anyone's opinion, but how would any of you know about being TRUE artists of all you can do is sit here and criticize? You can't sit back and APPRECIATE the fact that - regardless of how good she is - she is passionate. In my opinion, her vowel shapes need work, and she doesn't have very good acting skills, no. But "criticism is poison". Especially to the person GIVING it.

What does she know about bel canto? She's a caricature - no musicality, no acting skills. Only thing she one HAD were vocal acrobatics. As an artist, she's a zero.
@Miauriceful Good one, but really...Think of all those great vocalists (not necessarily opera singers) who also studied "some year" but ten-fifteen years into their careers, their voices are already deteriorated. Now, Gruberova sure does not sound like she's 30, but she's absolutely incredible nevertheless.Especially considering the kind of repertoire she is known for, it's unbelievable how she has preserved her vocal chords.I still don't know how she does it. She should write a book about it.
Well, It is not easy to see why some have a long career and other short, because each one is different from others, but my experience tells me that those who have studied a lot and has learned the right technique for singing has a much longer career.
Today, the Opera is a show business and the show can not wait, so many begin their careers without solid foundations.
"when u are alone in a room and thinking all the problems there is only one solution: You persuade yourself you are Callas and you start singing all the Assoluta roles ridiculously, then all becomes fine and dandy"
"he wrote that brilliantly" the pianist speaks of Donizetti at 7:20, and it's so true. It's when you have the music on the piano with just the singer and the pianist that you realize how great the masterpiece really is.

trying to create some more coloraturas--say decorations---to achieve her mannerisms...until you cannot recognize the score any more....! Uff---and looking so terribly old--Che brutta faccia-not my taste!
@panelspray Of course there is nothing wrong to look old ! But many are still looking gorgeous at this age ! She wasn't a beauty at a younger age, (!) so that I found this an unpleasant and unnecessary Clip ! YT is full of junk anyway, and this is one of those! I know, I sure will not watch this again. It was a hazard anyway. I am NOT a fan of her- a jukebox- manifesting coloraturas all the time instead of REAL emotion !
@classic551 Is that why she's been one of the most acclaimed coloratura's of her generation? If you don't like her then keep your opinions to yourself, because none of us here no your name or frankly care about what you have to say. Ignorant buffoon.
@classic551 But she's a VOCALIST , the important is the VOICE, not the beauti!!! asshole. she's like 60 but still have the voice when she has 20!!!. She's a goddess -.-
She is not my favorite soprano, nor has she ever been, but this was fascinating. Her passion for her art comes through, and OMG....she songs remarkably for 60??? Whoa. Brava!
@JussidelMonaco ..."allowed" to sing Norma? Anyone is allowed to sing Norma. What's more, if you want to buy a ticket, you're allowed to listen. Or not, if you choose.
@JussidelMonaco Yes I probably agree re the role on stage; but coud I say that I did a recording as a member of the Ambrosian Opera Chorus in London of Lucia sung by Gruberova, conducted by Richard Bonying (Orchestra was I think the LSO) a few years ago now and she was FABULOUS - just great technical singing. She stopped the session dead after her mad scene and all orchestral musicians and session singers applauded for nearly 5 minutes. That doesn't happen very often I can tell you!
wow, I love this, singing is wonderful, but its great to see the performer before they step on stage and to have them express their zeal for the artform!
This is brilliant, and thank-you to whoever put the English subtitles up there as it is really helping with my German. Love Gruberova, always have, despite her many, many flaws :D Und wer ist der (amerikanische?) Mann, der spielt Klavier fur sie?
Incredible how she can still keep that voice at that age! I have loved her voice since the first time I heard her sing live in Lucia at the Opera in Vienna.
I'm so jealous of the pianist, getting to sing with Gruberova, having her sing Cs where he likes. I've always thought it'd be so great if there was a C here, or a Bb there. GOD how I'd love to have his job!
Thanks for the video and the subtitles as well. Absolutely - her technique is spot on. Her dynamics so wonderful, the pp-ff phrasing is really unique.
what a delightful woman with a great authentic personality, which is reflected in her unique timbre, material, technique, musicality and expressivity: such grand devotion to the own talent and profession, it's very very rare in the modern opera theatre. Thats love for music. Thanks
I've always liked Gruberova. But after watching this, I like her even more. She just seems so nice, so approachable. And after all these years, she's still so passionate about her art. Thanks for posting this video.

I love her!!! Every singer is afraid of the high notes, and she transposes her arias up.... :-)

She transposes them up because her middle register is underdeveloped and because she has no low notes to speak of.

@Elisabetta611 It's not she who transposes them up, it's all the others (except Sutherland, Anderson and maybe a few others) who transpose down.
