i like how you guys make these easy-to-use programs so that anyone can hack a super mario 64 game. it's really fun. my kid brother likes to use it too, you know, stuff like adding three king bomb-ombs and a king whomp in the same spot. stuff like that. what about water blocks, i seem to have trouble adding those into the course. is there a trick to it?
is it possible to use the level importer without the GUI?
I'm working on a plugin for Sketchup that automatically triangulates, subdivids (if needed), exports to an .obj-file, writes a settings-file (for the importer) and imports to the rom;
but opening the GUI freezes Sketchup and you have to manually open the settings-file (or configure the importer manually).
The file obj_import.exe only shows "please use Windows GUI" D:
@JTBrinkmann I have been too busy to finish up v13, but yeah it could be used as a command-line utility if you provide a settings file.
However, there's still collision mapping, which would need be to done manually by editing the .mtl file or, in the next version, directly from the GUI (this was a feature I added after this video).
Hmm..Everytime I try to do this my rom dies. This time I tried to see where in the process my rom would die. I checked the normal rom, worked. Extended it, worked. Then when I expanded it, it died. Well, I tried in xp mode also as admin and it didnt die, but the screen was blank black when I tried to play it. It all worked except I couldnt see anything. Makes me sad. :(
@WereRabbbit Actually, retried without the admin and xp and it still works. It died after the patch. When I say it dies, it gets the cic chip error etc. like you do in the video, but when I get past that, it doesnt play. It stays black and the FPS freezes with no indication of moving or starting.
I'm having trouble with converting the textures. how do you do it? do you drag and drop it to the converting program then use it in Google Sketch-up? I followed the steps on your site but with no success.
@metaknight2550 Some anti-virus don't like hacking tools because their code modifies files (but in this case, only your SM64 ROM). Which specific file did Avira said it contained a trojan?
@metaknight2550 Avira has hopelessly bad search heuristics, and from my Google search it seems to be a champion on false positives. Just ignore the warning, or try another (better) anti-virus if you want to confirm that it's safe.
Wow, this looks a lot neater right now. I've been experimenting with your level importer for the past month now and I'm really digging what you've done here. I'm trying to make my own hack of Mario 64 using Blender, though it's a little bit tricky because I'm not used to 3D modeling :P.
But I have to give you a BIG thanks for making this Frauber!
I love the new look to this, good thing you can use multiple water boxes now too. One thing though, will the music XML importer be in here, or a separate program?
@emoluvjd2 Separate program. What may be integrated into the Level Importer is a new custom music inserter, but that will probably be in v14 since it will require new ROM hacks. It will probably feature Custom Music slots, so you won't have to replace any sequence from the game.
@frauber Dudaw12 Has good abiltys at hacking same as you. You guys both do awesome videos with new discoverys about hacking SM64. Check his videos if you want.
@Walktrougher I know his videos. He's a nice "empirical" hacker, but he must learn more about the game/programming otherwise he'll never understand fully what he's doing. Once you know how things works, anything can be discovered and I haven't seen that yet from him. He has my respect though for bringing quality hacks and willing to experiment, which is the right mindset for anyone who wishes to really ROM Hack.
@frauber Have you seen Dudaw's stuff? They're pretty good. Skelux's hack shows promise as well.
I imagine there are a bunch of people out there who are trying to perfect their modeling skills before making a hack. Give it a year or so and we should start seeing stuff on par with what's out there for Super Mario World.
@RDX12606 Yeah, Dudaw hack looks promising but I'm not sure how he will manage his "team", I hope he scraps out bad levels and just select the very best of them.
I have a lot of faith in Skelux since he's an superb level designer, but I'm not sure if he's still working on his hack.
I'll ask the team for help as I go. If they don't pay much attention, I'll just have to do it myself. All of the levels are figured out and this should work the way I want it to.
And RDX, Frauber is right. Don't think I'm that amazing just yet.
I hope with the next or later released of this program, the problem with textures looking stretched will be fixed. I'm using 32x32 textures and subdividing hasn't solved my problem :s
@Chancer4ever Do you get warnings from the importer? If so and dividing your faces doesn't solve the problem, you must make your models smaller in SketchUp. It's a limitation of the N64 console.
By the way, you may also try using 64x32 and 32x64 textures.

greate job dude!
I'm using the importer (v12) for a while now, and it's interresting messing around with new levels :D
But you made a video of the importer v13 and wrote about a future v14 in the comments 5 month ago; while I only find v12 on your site o_O?
Would be nice to get the newest one :D

Thank you SOOOO much for including the new ObjExporter, the other one didn't work as well on Vista.

@WereRabbbit It's something in your emulator settings, probably it's pausing after the error. If nothing works, try a different version or emulator.
frauber 1 year ago
@frauber I think it is, and it did say something about settings. How can I set it up to work? And which version do you recommend? I used 1.6 and 1.7
WereRabbbit 1 year ago
@WereRabbbit Actually, have you enabled extended memory on your emulator as my site says (both steps)?
frauber 1 year ago
@frauber I dont believe so. I just installed it like yesterday since my C drive got wiped. Regardless, the rom worked on version 1.4 :)

How big is mario?
It would help to know so that a level isn't too big or too small.

I got a trojan virus with this :/
metaknight2550 1 year ago
@metaknight2550 How come? Unless some anti-virus gave you a false positive on one of the importer modules (though I highly doubt that).
frauber 1 year ago
@frauber I don't know, I unpacked it, and Avira popped up saying it's a trojan :/
But it's safe, right? :P

@GlitchMaster7 Yeah, I'm rewriting a hack I used for "The Missing Stars" so there can be more flexibility on it.

Hmmm. This one looks alot neater. However, you may want to get rid of the Object Banks thing. We could do that stuff in TT64.
Eggs6131 1 year ago
@Eggs6131 It's not possible to do that in Toad's Tool 64, it's one of the main features of the level importer.
