In WW2, the forces of the sultan of johor kept the japanese imperial army from reaching singapore for months. They were equipped with outdated weapons but they fought ferociously, even with parangs.

During the malayan emergency, the malayan forces taught the SAS jungle warfare. Check "The complete encyclopedia of the SAS" by Barry Davies B.E.M..
