And the thing is, a good chunk of that is going to line the pockets of a bunch of big-wig cronies.

Of course some villagers will be compensated and relocated. That is progress. To stage a protest because it is too expensive is resonable but not otherwise. The HK Govt is one of the most progressive and the issue was debated thouroughly and democratically voted upon. Nothing will be done if this attitude persist. Majority decision must prevail.

The villagers are not being relocated. They are forced to move into apartments. They are going to lose their way of live. Hong Kong does not have democratically elected government. The issue has not been debated thoroughly.

So I guess your issue is with your Govt not being democratically elected. This is the dream of Martin Lee and probably people like you. Why don't you just focus on the issue i.e. is relocating (by force or not) a few villagers for the railway a right thing to do. Donald said the issue had been debated for the last 10 years and you say it is not thorough. I am an outside observer.
