@mihanich Great Zimbabwe fell before European contact. In the 1400s, when it fell only the Portuguese had reached Africa but that was Mocambique which is far from this site.
I just want to say that "Great Zimbabwe" is not the only building in sub-Saharan Africa, not even the biggest. There are many historical constructions in Africa that are older and larger than "The Great Zimbabwe", such as the pyramids of Nubia and Timbuktu city.

'Great' might be a little overstated lol, Harappa in Pakistan is OVER 3000 years old - that should be call 'Great Harappa' and this, 'mediocre zimbabwe' - saying that its probably called great because for black people its fucking amazing! :D

Olmec cities (2300-1800 B.C. beginnings), Zapotec cities(600 B.C.), Maya (600 B.C.), Teotihuacan (100 B.C), etc. And the vast majority had more than 100 thousand inhabitants and occupied a vast territory, example: Teotihuacan, came to have an area of nearly 21 km 2, with a population from 100 thousand to 250 thousand inhabitants.
@exupipus haha yes well, it may look that way - but great zimbabwe is also small and miserable and less than a third of the age. There are some great civilizations in meso america without a doubt - cant take that away from you and I hope to be able to some at least some of them one day.

Great Zim whoever built these remarkable buildings it was not ancestors of people now living in the area. San & Hottentots would be better candidates and yet they along with Bantu have no records of building these. It is curious that African verbal traditions (no written language) no wheel to leverage rocks have no tales of who did create them. For my money the reason for the seemingly abrupt end of this civilization the result of annihilation of invading Bantu the conquers.

The few native tribes that were there couldn't deal with Malaria, so were never able to settle much of that land.

I went there a few years back. After walking around the ruins and seeing them for myself. I still cant believe that they were built solely by the people of zimbabwe. far too many things don't ad up, when you look at the construction methods and stone work. But hey thats history for you, you can never realy prove anything. You can only ever speculate. Try walking around Lalibela or Sankore. Also, see the architectural work of Paul Williams. Blacks have always built magnificent things. Try walking around Rozwi or Dhar-Tichitt.
