Damn french people know how to make twisted flicks, this, irreversible, and martyrs are the best i have seen so far, just about to watch calvaire now, ;)
there are alot of great french horror films À'l intérieur aka "Inside" being the best but this is one of the worst...its shit. only good thing about this film is the two girls..Leila Bekhti especially who plays yasmine I think is totally gorgeous and the other girl aint bad either
@tiggychunk but it's just one movie.. dunno what it's worth cuz i didn't see it yet but france has Frontiers, High Tension, Inside and above all Martyrs, the best horror movie ever shot plus a few others that i haven't watched but are also famous abroad. However Sheitan is not to be in this list. It's a comedy all along; only the ending is a lil creepy when this guys has his eyes taken off but that's it i guess..
I think people should be more 'opened' to films from different countries and genres as Hollywood America aren't always up to scratch with their foreign counterparts well people shouldn't be so narrowed to English based language.
Sorry I am a fan of horror and cheap horror is easy to do. I find the British are way better than the French. I watched a fun horror comedy made in the UK that I really enjoyed. It is called Cottage.
The french kings of horror? Oh please; some of their movies ARE really good, but the BEST, hardly -even the Italians have them beat. However, I applaud the effort. At least they're starting to do SOMETHING right. Have a looooong way to go before they can compete with the U.S.A. Srry, frenchies -lost again, lol (love ya'lls salad dressing though :p).
WATCH THIS LAST NIGHT SO CREEPY AND SOOO MUCH FUN THIS IS ONE TO BE AN INSTANT FAVORITE, IM ASHAMED TO LIVE IN AMERICA WHEN ALL THE GOOD HORROR IS OVER~SEAS.
Watched this last night. I like French horror, and I'm a big Vincent Cassel fan, so I thought I'd give it a go. Spent most of the movie hoping it would get better, and when it was over, I kicked myself for not just giving up and turning it off halfway through. Terrible.
While I agree with the fact that the French seem to have figured out how to combine disturbing and violent visuals with deeply ingrained substance and emotion, I still think House of the Devil is one of the best true suspense horror flicks since the original Black Christmas. (The original. Not the crappy remake from a few years back.)
French are the undisputed kings of horror at the moment. High Tension & Inside are hands down the 2 best horror movies to come out it 30+ years. America no longer makes adult horror films it's all kiddies stuff. All their movies are made for a "tweeny" audience. But then European horror directors have always been more daring than American directors. They don't have to answer to the MPAA & industry execs who all have a bunch of accountants telling them how a movie needs to be to make money.
I agree but not High Tension also the French only have like three horror films that are good and when your talking about American horror which type mainstream or underground a lot of mainstream is for kiddies.
Well i've seen a few both underground & mainstream recent American horror films & they did nothing for me, i still prefered the French ones. For American it's oldschool all the way. Oh & High Tension was great, it had a lot of elements of classic oldschool video nasty era horror films... the right texture & vibe aswell... & the concrete saw was very classic. By underground American horror, name a few & i'll tell you if i've seen them.
But my 2 favourite oldschool video nasty era U.S. horror films are the original Texas Chainsaw & Nightmare In A Damaged Brain (or simply Nightmare).
Texas had no gore & very little violence in general, but it was so frenzied & i dunno...demented. Still right up there as one of the most demented pieces of mainsteam cinema to this day.
And nightmare in a damaged brain is not only demented with a really grim vibe, it also delivers in the gore department (well the uncut version does anyway).
@madiadalia not that i know of right off the top of my head right aqt this moment... those are my 2 recent faves, other than that i generally gravitate to 70s - early 80s stuff for obvious reasons. I can PM you a list of movies that's not necessarily from the last 10 years.
@madiadalia oh, actually, there is Mother Of Tears (2007)... Dario Argento's sequel to Suspiria & Inferno. A lot of people hated it, but i liked it. I thought it was a return to the old style of horror & looked like & felt an Argento film. Admittedly though it does have a pretty crappy ending.
@dave4378 Id say its the korean horrors that are the worse, did you ever see A Tale Of Two Sisters. That was pretty disturbing but i'll have to watch this before i can have an actual opinion.
@aaaagk i'm not really a fan of the Asian horror, not really the style i'm going for. I would recommend seeing High Tension aka Switchblade Romance (2003) & Inside (2007) over this movie.
@aaaagk true, but contemporary south korean film are pretty genre bending and arguably the most inventive in the medium... some of which /could/ be considered horror, butthen again, they are ecclectic. i havenet seen a very impressive straight korean horror, but black-comedy-drama-horror? im hard pressed to think of better titles outside the country.
sheitan is an oddity. i dont know why but ive seen it 3 times and it never ceases to amuse. chal;k it up to slick editing...& of course v cassel
@Daevi1 i don't really like the style. Stuff like Ringu & The Grudge etc is not the kind of thing i'm looking for as an avid horror fan for more than 20 years & not what i'd call a real horror film. It's hard to describe really, but the modern style of horror doesn't cut it for me.
Evil Dead Trap (1988) from Japan was a good one though. Ignore the English title though, has nothing to do with Sam Raimi's Evil Dead... completely different movie. Check Out The Evil Dead Trap trailer on Youtube.
@dave4378 I'll check it out... hahaha i tried to find this and ended up with some movie about a secratery who worked during the fall of the third reich @_@ hahahaha
@dave4378 yeah man. Sheitan, Le Calvaire, Irreversible (thriller, not horror I guess), Inside...the French are master nightmare manufacturers these days. I'm interested in seeing some more French Canadian horror/thrillers. 7 Jours Du Talion was incredibly intense.
I woke up one night at like 3am, and this movie was on IFC, just started. I couldn't go back to sleep so I just watched it. It rocked me to my core. I didn't go back to sleep after the movie was over. It didn't really scare as much as it made me think. It is a really freaky movie.
If i tell you what's happen, there will be not "surprise effect"... To sum up, 4 friends from Paris meet a girl who invite them in her house in the french land for the night before Christmas...
You have to watch it but i don't know if the subtitled version exist... The only thing i can tell you is that movie is very very strange and you'll feel bad after watching
hey what the hell it's going on with the picture at the end of the film.. right before the credits, vincent cassel showing his penis and a fat woman? that was fucking disturbing
hey what the hell it's going on with the picture at the end of the film.. right before the credits, vincent cassel showing his penis and a fat woman? that was fucking disturbing

To be able to transition from roles he played in La Haine and Irreversible to a character such as the one here takes a great deal of talent...
