I've always loved this song, originally and best recorded by Bare. Kenny Rogers WISHES he sang it this well. Google has no clue, and hey, nick? obviously you're about 4 years old.
Yeah, it's definitely Bobby Bare. Years ago, Bob Morgan on Amber Radio in East Anglia always used to wind up his evening country show with this one (anyone remember "light my lights"?). I loved the song! Still do.
Google hasn't a clue on this one. It is indeed BB..I have the original 45 (Columbia 10831) and it doesn't say anything about Kenny Rogers on the label. Moral: Don't rely too much on Google!
Actually Rick Nelson first recorded this song...

Don Williams did a good job with his version also.

I knew that somebody other than Kenny Rogers had the hit on this song, but I didn't realize it was Bobby Bare.

Actually, Bobby Bare is the one who had the hit with the song. Kenny Rogers did record a version of it the same year on his album "The Gambler".
