When the son at the end said those fags make me wanna puke, was he saying that because that's how he really feels? Or was he saying that because he knows his father is secretly gay?
@Chilean88 He says it because he's being sarcastic. He's pushing his dad's buttons because he knows he can. Ricky shrugs the comment off the first time, but then when his dad says don't placate me, it pisses Ricky off, so he just says what he knows his dad wants to hear, even though they both know it's bullshit. It shows how pointless the whole business of hating gays is.
I LOVE how the Jims' (gay couple) faces change and how they skip a beat when the Colonel says "But you said you're partners....so what's your business?"
ive been researching, trying to find out exactly why Barbara Fitts is nearly catatonic. Can anyone tell me? I know her husband is horrible and violent, and in the end we find out he is homosexual himself, but is there any underlying reason im not seeing?
She's been used to doing everything like he wants to, that she's lost all sort of personality as well as the feeling of responsibility besides the daily routine that she's grown used to.
She's kind of living in her own world. The world he presumably forced her into.
@TheNextAvrilLavigne You should definitely see the film but basically Ricky's father locked him in an institute for two years for smoking marijuana. His father is also a closet homosexual so he had underlying issues with any slightly effeminate behaviour from his son. :P
@BrendonUrieIs4eva I did and i was bored to death not to mention appalled. A man in a loveless relationship with his wife starts crushin' on his daughter's bff and a dreamy boy next door stalking the daughter with a camera and lets not forget the father buying pot from the hot neighbor. Don't get me wrong, I LOVE Wes Bentley especially in Ghost Rider but this movie was more like a soap opera rather than an academy award hit.
@TheNextAvrilLavigne maybe you just need to look closer ;) lol, sorry had to put that in there. well, I spose it's not for everyone but I loved it i thought the themes underneath all your classic soap opera plotlines were quite beautiful and the irony of the title when you reflect on the film always makes me smile too. But, if you didn't enjoy it that's cool. he was excellent in ghost rider I thought.
@BrendonUrieIs4eva well the father is going straight to hell if he keeps treating his family like it's the 50s again i mean look at the way ricky's dressed and mrs. fitts looks like betty crocker lol
@BrendonUrieIs4eva It's been a while since I've seen the movie but where did you get that the father is a closet homosexual? I thought he was just a homo-phobe?
I love how Ricky doesn't placate him until after the colonel tells him so to stop placating him

Goes to show how unhealthy it must be for a human being having to live inside of a closet their whole life. Pretty sad...

@Chilean88 I think it is just to keep the peace, otherwise his dad would have kept on going and going about them

Colonel Frank Fitts (USMC) is by far my favorite character in this whole movie. Chris Cooper is an absolutely amazing and VERY underrated actor.

@krystin027:
No, that's probably the only reason. Being browbeaten into submission for 20+ years will do that to you....

@krystin027 Probably not.
