Took my open water dive here, and yes the current is strong!!!! Lake Huron dumps into the St Clair River. Thanks for the video Captain Sparrow!!!! I grew up on the St Clair River, swam there as a kid, and it was great to come back and take my open water dive there!!!!
just came through algonoc with my band. we went swimming right off the boardwalk...my buddy cut the shit outta his foot...still nice though..the water is so blue..compared to anything here in IL youd think it was fiji. i heard it wasnt the safest river to swim in? murcery levels or something like that?
@Bhousm76 I don't think it's Mercury levels, while the Great Lakes all have some Mercury levels, it's not a safe dive due to: river boat traffic, the current, fishing line/hooks, other objects. This is not a dive you just jump in and do, but there are locals that will take you out and guide you. When we lived in Michigan in the 90's, the viz was bad but now thanks to all of the zebra mussels you see here the viz is better which makes for a bit safer dive.
well, this river was put on the list of AOC. (Area of concern) due to heavy metals in the water. they also applied regulations to companies dumping stuff in the river. i saw a picture before and after the regulations took effect..the water was much more blue and probably more clear as well.
@Bhousm76 thanks when was this AOC? Sadly, I'm not surprised, it's just not something I thought of while diving as there were far more other things to be concerned with to survive and enjoy the dive. As a diver you could see all of the "crap" dumped in the river from eons past and even current years. the paper company was constantly dumping, it's in one of the videos. has this stopped?
Never dove any of the Great Lakes, but I've heard visibility was totally crap, visibility doesn't look that bad.. Nice video.
